most gearbox dont have a synchro on the reverse gear. this means that if you try to put it into reversewhile everything is still turning then it will grounch. also if your lazy like me and only out your foot half down on the clutch it will do it also. so let the truck come to a complete stop then try.

My truck does the same thing. If it's rolling it will not go into reverse (graunch, graunch) double de-clutching does not work (in my case) and neither does putting it in first gear then going to reverse. I can only put in reverse when I have come to a complete stop.

As a side note my beach buggy (holden 202 and 4speed) will quite often not go into reverse, even at a standstill (graunch, graunch) until I put it into first gear first. Can anyone tell me why this is? :D

You cannot put the box into reverse when moving forwards as the shaft holding reverse gear is turning in the opposite direction to the input gear that you are trying to mesh it with.
Putting the gearbox into another gear before going into reverse on older transmissions tends to stop everything else moving and line things up a bit better
