Any ideas for an ignition system for racing 3.9V8 engine?

I've bought a low Km Disco without a body and stripped it to get a reliable drive train for my LR Bowler Tomcat. The sad part is that the ECU and all the other electronics are missing and the loom has been chopped.
The engine/injection/spark are the only things electronically controlled as far as I know and can find out. I would like to set it for endurance races like the Taupo 1000 and Woodhill 100 and maybe even that series they run around the Auckland area.
I need ideas and suggestions or even assistance from the cognoscenti - keep in mind the thing has cost me megabucks already though. This truck won some serious championships in the UK and while the old 3.5L carburetted job still seems OK, it is totally gutless. I think that if I could get a reasonable amount of power out of the later engine, with a reliable drivetrain, it handles well enough to make a dent in some of the other more fancied brands' pride.
I've investigated LINK quite thoroughly, the consensus is that only the latest unit ($2100) would be good enough - most of the earlier ones are problematic on Rover V8s for some reason with flat spots off the idle which is exactly what you don't want - but to buy the new one looks like about $3500 by the time its fitted up and tuned.
LPG and HEI ignition might give the power but there's a capacity problem with the available space for a big tank.
By the way, I won't be driving this myself, the idea of 500kms a day doesn't do a lot for me - one 26km lap of Taupo would be fun enough for a week or two.
