More Power out of factory 4.2 turbo Safari

Post by waterboy123 »

I have got a stock 95 SWB Safari with the factory 4.2 turbo motor, it's a good step up from my old NA one, but I want to get some more grunt out of it, whats the safest max boost you can run on the factory turbo? I was also going to do a full three inch exhaust, and who in auckland can I get to tune it and wind up the fuel pump?

Cheers

If playing with boost, I'd make sure to run a EGT guage to be safe.

500c post turbo or 650c pre turbo from what I've been told.
Someone may be able to confirm if this is correct or not.

Engine life is directly related to EGT's (i.e. fuel and boost). A turboed TD42 will do many 100,000kms with a max EGT of 550 degrees (post turbo). Most will suggest that extended periods over 600 degrees is reducing engine life...and we've got several buggered engines in the workshop that is testiment to that!!!

You're fortunate you've got the factory turbo engine as it has the heavier pistons and better piston oil squirters than the N/A engine of the same age.

If you want a reliable rig that will gives you years of use, stick to 14-16psi boost and fuel to suit (max 550 degree EGT). The factory dump pipe benefits by replacing with 3" jobbie available from MTQ (DTS turbos). The factory injection pump is your biggest limiting factor and the only way past this is an injection pump upgrade. We do these for about $1750 - $2k depending on your requirements.

As Dave suggested, fit a pyro gauge and boost gauge to monitor it.

Cheers
