The R15x series of box is generally accepted as being the strongest however the W5x range is also okay for use behind a V8 as long as it's not thrashed and abused.
The R15x series can be found behind the V6 petrol and some diesel engines. You will pay good money for these though.
Are you going to run the Toyota transfer case as well?
Cheers

Never heard hilux gearbox and strong used in the same sentence before

I used the word strongest in relation to the Hilux gearbox's
The R15x is still a very strong affordable gearbox.

I'm planning on using all toymoter running gear, I already got a lot of work cut out for me with all the chassis and suspension alterations as it is without having to make multiple adapter plates.

if your looking at setting up a mu with hilux gear in it then you should look at Supralux's truck for sale. its the facelift mu with wizard interior i think. all complete except engine and has sas hilux gear in it about a 10 inch lift or something, fully certed and an amazing truck. he was looking or about $3000 for it last i heard. would save you alot of work time and money. or if you are keen do to it yourself he should be able to give you some advice. look for is build thread on here in the projects section

I've seen it advertised and it would be a good buy but i'm doin a allround coil over jobby, also what would be the fun in buying sombody else's work?? cheaper but nowhere near as challenging. He has writen a great write up on that build which I have read a couple times and will come in handy.
Steve would be on the people I go to when needing advice though.

Of course not, thats like saying that dodge vipers are slightly fast.
The toyota gearbox and strong is more in the territory of saying it should be legal to marry your sister, you know its wrong, it shouldn't be said, and WHY THE HELL EVEN THINK IT

my 5cents worth,
the R15* series gearboxes are based on the R154 twin turbo supra gearbox,
which is capable of handling over 500hp in a drag car.
so givin that the Toyota V8 only emits about 260hp and has not a great deal of torque. im sure a R15* will be fine
her are the ratios from the R15* family of toyota geaboxes:
Trans code, 1st , 2nd , 3rd , 4th , 5th , R,application
R150 3.830, 2.062, 1.436, 1.000, 0.838 ,4.220 ,2WD trucks
R150F 3.830, 2.062, 1.436, 1.000, 0.838, 4.220, 4WD trucks
R151 4.31, 3.32, 1.52, 1.00, 0.83 , ? , 4WD trucks
R154 3.25, 1.95, 1.30, 1.00, 0.75 , ? , Supra
i added included the supra box just for comparison.
they are hard ot find and worth about $1500 on the cheap end of the scale
the 4WD boxes are in most surfs and landcrusers around the early to mid 90's
the surf boxes have a electro mechanical 4x4 engagment.
and the surf boes also are connected to the 2LT which is prone to failure.
the these trucks are very quickly becomeing wrecks as the ppl who put them on tick cannot affort to repair them.
$500 -1000 is not uncommon for the whole truck, but thats here in Dorkland where most of them are being put on tick then run into the ground.
Cheers,
Daniel.

Thanks, not a bad 5c worth really. I was told that a KZN130 came out of a mid 90's 3L,td surf, is this model of surf or a different box???

ah that would be the facelift 95 onwards i think, same gearbox also, i think.
the *N130's were the 1st of the 5 doors surfs with ifs and coil rear
went right thru to 98 i think, im not sure tho.
u rekon it was 10cents?

That depends if you want the 10c's or not

So that model box would be worth buying for $650 then???? so would the KZN 130 box use the r series boul housing??
Cheers, Nathan

Yea, i guess 650 is ok. i sold one a while back for 300 on trademe
upon reflection i should have sold it on here.
am resonably certain the KZN130 uses the R series box.

KZN130 was a 5-door 3.0 litre turbo diesel surf... R150 gearbox or A34* auto...
The weak Hilux boxes were the G-series (G52 4- and 5-speeds). Slightly better was the W56 found in LN61 Surfs (IFS 2.4TD or 2l petrol) but not much.
The 130-series surfs ran from around '89 (3- and 5-door) - and ended in '96 when they went to the kzn185 - which I believe still ran the R-series as a manual box.
You're right tho, the R-series manual is VERY strong, although had a tendency to pop out of first when they get a bit worn - heard of that a few times... apparently an easy fix.

Steve, any idea what the fix is?
Mine pops out of first when it's cold.

No idea off hand, I just know they do it, and there is a fix... no idea what the fix is... talk to a toyota shop, or a gearbox one... they should be able to point you in the right idea. Post the info back up if you get it

yea id be keen on that. mine pops out and my m8s is even worse than mine. not really a problem just annoying. the previous owner of mine said that toyota told him they couldnt fix it or it would be 2 expensive.

Food for thought,
It can be caused but a body lifted truck having the gearstick boot put pressure on the gearstick so when your going from power to overun
the boot pops it out of gear..
I have seen it happen. i guess it could be a cause.
but most likely not the only cause,
if its an internal problem then removing and stripping the box is the only way of fixing it. even if its only a $20 part that needs replacing.

na happens when stock standard body lift made no difference

Apparently there are two common issues, one is shifter bushings, and the other is main shaft bearing plate.
The shifter bush is about $25 apparently. Marlin Crawler has a fix kit for the bearing for $45 US.
The bearing piece might be available elsewhere, I don't know.
