Auto locking hubs

Hi, I have recently bought a 1989 Surf and I am wondering whether its true that Auto locking hubs only work when moving forwards.
If this is the case, can anyone suggest a good make of manual locking hubs and who supplies them.

I don't know if thats true or not, because I have auto hubs on my nissan safari and it quite often can go just as far in reverse as it can forwards like last time in the sand I got furthur up a sand dune in reverse than I did going forward, If auto hubs only worked while going forward then I don't see that this could be possible. Just a thought.

My work hack (Datsun 720) has auto hubs, and I have to reverse to engage and disengage.
But being a work hack I am reluctant to spend money on it. My toy is running AVM manual hubs and the knowledge that they are either ingaged or disengaged is reasuring.
However the AVM hubs (in my opnion) are shit, mine have fractures in them and that was from the 31 inch tyres, I am yet to find out how long they will last with the 35's

How auto hubs work.

After engaging 4wd in the cab, the auto hubs need drive from the front drive shaft and rotation of the front wheels to lock them in. When you then choose reverse the the hubs unlock and relock. Unfortunately if you lose traction and the front wheels don't rotate enough, they wont lock in again. This in my eyes is not the best system, for serious offroading. Can also be very dangerous.
