Lots of options, all expensive... and all will cost more to run.
Supra-swap: 5MG-EU 2.8L straight-6 - getting hard to find the required manual bellhousing now - also not that much better power at 100km/h anyway
Later Supra-swap: 2JZ-GE 3L straight 6 - easier to find, harder to fit - need adaptor to the auto bellhousing (SupraSurf can get you one of those - lots of dicking about getting things sorted tho) Better 100km/h power, newer engine, nicer finish, harder to waterproof
2.8 diesel with hairdryer: 3L toyota 2.8 diesel, modified with 2.4 turbo bolted to it - this is a nice solution, but like everything its costly... good power tho.
Lexus V8 - just don't... screamy and 'orrible...
Chev V8 - yep, nice - but thirsty - good power and torque
Holden V6 - 3.8L V6 from a VP onwards commy... good but same problem at 100km as the 5MG... they really are a torquey motor and lack a little in the speed-overtaking stakes...
Holden 5L V8 (or better - 5.7 or 6L V8 ) - similar to the Chev motors... thirsty by all accounts but good power and torque.
So, lots of options, but nothing is likely to cost you less than around 3-4k and most of them probably closer to 5 or 6k...
All that aside, what do you use the truck for? What ratios of on and off road? What are your plans for it? Might be good to start with the end in mind...

thanks steve
cheers man, basicly i'm only going to be using the truck in a limited offroad capacity, river crossing, beach and snow work, etc. as for the ratios?, tell me where to look and i'll find em. Done all the basic stuff already, new oil an filter, plugs leads, dizzy cap, rotor, condenser, air filter, rocker cover gasket, driveline and front hub greasing, diff transfer and gearbox oil.
By the looks of the options you listed it will be awhile before i do an engine swap, so any ideas on helping the 3y along?

Nope, theres nothing you can do sorry - they are a small 2 litre 4-cylinder engine pushing a big old brick through the air...
They can be supercharged, but once again the cost wouldn't make it worth while...
And the ratio is was talking about was the amount of off-roading vs. the amount of on-roading... although you pretty much answered that.
Short answer, leave it as it is... its not a sports car
