What does this all mean?

Post by toycruiser »

I have a 1993 Mitsubishi Pajero SWB and was wondering what all the different letters are on the gear stick at the top it has 4LLc than 4HLc than 4H and 2H as you can tell i no nothing about 4WDs :oops:

Generally speaking:

4H = 4wd high range, ie normal 1st,2nd,3rd etc gears but in 4wd mode.
2H = 2wd high range ie normal 1st,2nd,3rd etc gears but in 2wd mode.

4L = 4wd low range. ie really slow 1st,2nd,3rd etc in 4wd
there will not be a 2L because low range should always be engaged in 4wd

now the 4HLc I'm guessing its fulltime 4wd and the centre diff is locked(if fulltime 4wd)? and same when in low range, although I would have presumed that centre diff is locked when in low range anyway. I'm just stabbing in the dark as I've never set foot in the front of a nissan before :oops: If you had bought a landrover or a surf then I could help :wink:

Thanks for that Mike, its not full time 4WD does that make any diference? So when you say the centre diff is locked does that make all 4 wheels drive at the same time and when thats not on they drive sepretly?

If its not full time 4wd then you wont have a centre diff. but you are right in that locking a centre diff locks the front and rear drive trains to each other. Don't do this on tarmac, you wont get to far before things start happening 8)

Hi Bubba,

All you'll ever need to know about diff locks right here http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/diffsinfo.html
Automatic ones are described about halfway down the page.

:lol: Thanks Mike you da man, I now know more about diffs than I ever thought I needed or wanted to know. Now when asked I can speak with great authority and knowledge.

I must say that is nice to be able to ask dump ass questions in a non-judgemental place such as this :afro:

No worries,

Keep asking away, every question you ask I'm sure there are 10 others who didn't know either :wink: That way we all learn :albino:
