2L-TE oil pressure sender, wiring and gauge.

Well here's my problem... ongoing problem.

I have an oil pressure gauge in my dash that reads nothing. Reason for that is it isn't actaully connected to the oil pressure sender.

Now I've found the plug that connects a wire to the sender.

But I don't have the wire that plugs into this connector and then to the sender.

Fooling around lastnight I found if I stuck a piece of wire into the correct connection on the connector and then earthed it I could make the oil pressure gauge go all the way up to max. Yes!!! I thought at least the gauge works.

Then I thought just connect this wire to the oil pressure sender and fire the engine up and I'd have a working oil pressure gauge.

But no. All I can achieve is having the needle on the oil pressure gauge move slightly.

So either I'm missing something or I have next to no oil pressure. But then the engine has run for a couple of weeks without seizing.

Questions I haven't answered yet:
1.) the oil pressure sender might be the wrong one or faulty

2.) Why does the plug that connects the wire/s to the sender have two connections? I sense this might be important :)

This is the only gauge I haven't got working in the dash so would like to sort it, but it's irritating me to the point where I'll be done with it and install a mechanical gauge.

As always any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

What sort of truck do you have?

I have the Surf wiring diagrams here if that is any help.

Matt.

Okay, I reread the topic so you have an LN130 or onwards Surf :-)

My diagrams are only for the petrol models but are likely to be similar for the diesels with some exceptions.

I can email you the PDF for the dash gauges, it has all the colours and connectors and locations etc, it's quite good. PM me your email address if you want it.

The diagram shows a single wire, yellow with blue stripe.

Note that if you have applied 12v to either the gauge or the sender via the sensor wire then you may have killed either of them or both. The sensor wire runs less than 12v hence the gauge going to the end of the scale when you grounded it.

Cheers
Matt.

are you trying to wire up an after market gauge to the factory sender.
if this is the case your gauge wont work.

No. Factory gauge and factory sender (AFAIK).

Given up for the time being

I've given up for the time being and just installed a $25 mechanical oil pressure guage.

I will look into getting this gauge working again at some point when I have more time.

Thanks to those who offered advice.

hey mate, i know ou said you have given up for now, but this migt help, a yellow ire with a blue stripe goes from the sensor and the other wire goes to the ground if there is only one wire it willbe to the gauge and it just earth through the block, the sensor has a veriable resistor in it , is might be damaged and thats why the gauge just goes rite up, so maby if you replace the sensor then it will work again :)
