Maps, HELP!!!

Post by Guest »

Hi there,
A mate of mine has just got a 4wd, but we are struggling to find any maps with gravel roads marked on them. We are specifically after maps that show all the gravel roading and maybe even private roading(?) that goes to the coast of both the North and South Island. We are gong to use it for fishing, camping etc, and I thought experienced 4wders would be in the know...
Most stationery shops/service station maps just don't have the
detail to show roads other than sealed ones. So what do you use when going out to look for a track to run on? Of course the more affordable and
portable the maps are, the better...

Thanks for any help you can give me,

Regards,
Jim

Get some Topo maps (1:50,000) or the Terrain maps (1:250,000) from the Map Shop http://www.mapshop.co.nz/

If you want some 4WD tracks try the 4WD books by Andy Cockroft - at most bookstores or have a look on his site http://www.andic.co.nz/

If you want to really go 4WDing join your local 4WD club - you'll learn a lot more a lot quickly and you won't be one of the plonkers driving on private land without permission... or knocking on a cockies door asking for help when you get stuck.

The other and could also be the cheapest option is Maptoaster http://www.maptoaster.com, load it onto your computer and then you have the whole country to pick and choose as you please! :D
