Snorkels and LPG

Post by Jimi »

Hi guys

I'm wanting to put a snorkel on my FJ40 which is dedicated LPG - are there any issues I should be aware of?

I've heard of a number of people having problems with the motor not running right after fitting a snorkel, but I don't know if these were dual fuel setups or dedicated like mine.

Regards

Hi Andrew,
I've got a snorkel on my rangie, it's dual fuel, and it works fine 99.9% of the time. The only problem i have encountered with it is when its really windy and when the rev's are at idle, sometimes a BIG wind gust will blow the fire out (puts too much air with the LPG and it stalls), not really a problem as it happens very rarely.

hey.

im thinking bout putting a Snorkel on my landcruiser and i hav a duel fuel set up so hopefully it all goes sweet:)

What if your cruising along the motorway and the air is rushing in the snorkel head does this affect the running of the lpg?I guess it wouldnt because thats what happens without a snorkel anyway.

fitting a snorkel is supposed to give a slight perfomance increase due to the Air ram at the top. But I have reversed the ram on top (it now faces backwards) as the first muddy crossing I did, it got splattered.

From what I've read in the 4x4 mags the best thing to do is to have the ram pointing accross the windscreen as it avoides muck being flung from your tyres and from the front of the car.

I will be putting a gauze on the inside to stop debris too. Oh and sealing the Ram with Black Mastick, you'll see what I mean when you get one.

Have used tons of mastik on the bottom end too and am about to put a thick layer of vasaline around the inside Rim of the air filter to stop water seeping in.

Having the ram facing accross the windscreen can be a problem if you hit water at speed, water flies up, hits the windscreen then flies sideways into your snorkel.

Facing backwards seems to work fine. Also saved a Nissan diesel from dying today. Went down macetown with a mate and he conked out in the middle of the river, water upto the middle of the doors inside and out.

Towed him out, took 10 snatches to get him out as, I had to pull him from the river (need to buy that winch) and kept digging in :(

Proceeded to take the glow plugs out and then crank it lots, looks cool when your engine fires a spray of water from each cylinder 10ft into the air, just dont stand too close. I was 3 ft away and got covering in a splattering of oil/water/diesel. Ahh well.

This was all happening with two 4wd tours watching (12ppl), a group trip with 4 trucks and 3 familys and a few other spectators....

Have decided the snorkel was worth while, had great fun driving up and down the river at macetown :D

Hope you had fun tom ;)

PS: Only lost front number plate (In the snatchs out of the river) and a mud flap :)
