Soft top upgrade for 84 FJ40?

Post by petefj40 »

Hello there people!
I'm looking at getting a soft top made for my FJ40 only, I'm not sure which would be the best, plastic or canvas. Cost isn't a big factor. If it cost more I expect longer life and better reliability. (I hope to get what I pay for)
Another thing is doors. I'm not sure if I should go with half doors or stay orignal.

Any help here would be great!
Thanks, Pete.

I might end up having a go at making my own soft top for the LR.

my 2c - get some of those fibreglass half doors, so you can put the fulls on for winter.

That Bestop auction was mine, i couldnt believe how long it took to sell seing that they cost $900US and a pile of shipping on top of it if they would ship here. It seems people in NZ do not have the dough for this kind extra?

Well the dollar is looking better.
If I laid out $2k for one of those tops I'd want some kind of assurance that it will fit and not leak..
I've had quotes for almost half that if I use a local boys to make it. But then if this imported job fits perfectly and doesn't leak that might be the business for me.

go to a boat shop, and get a propper one made. One of the members here suggested that and it works out cheap, strong and durable as it's made for boats

if your taking the top off you might want to make up a hoop or roll bar if you havent already got one and make the soft top to fit :D

Yeah that was me, I've been quoted $500 for a custom made top - moulded to fit my roll bars and what ever colour/clear combo you want...

Can't beat that - and the marine canvas is tough as too 8)

Go with fibreglass half doors and get the Marine Trimmers to make clears (as part of your new soft top) that can be unzipped for the top half of the doors - best of both worlds

Yes i think I'll go canvas/zip/domed via a marine uupholster. And fibreglass half doors and front bonnet.
Should be way lighter. The front part of the rollcage gets finished tomorrow. The roof has to come off to complete it. The front cage is designed so the front screen can still be dropped forward. :D

8yrs of abuse sounds strong enough.
I was looking at a heavy weight plasitc but I think I'll go for the canvas instead.
