okay so here is the situation i currently own 1983 ex army series 3 landrover and at the moment all it does it fill one side of my garage i would like to use it off road but i want to do a couple of thing to it before hand i.e. tyres winch power steering
but today i happened to see a tidy 1976 range rover no rust in the sills or on the chassis tailgate was in excellent condition all round it was a tidy vehicle for it's age and almost ready to go bush already has power steering and a good set of tyres all it needs really is a winch
here is my delema i can't have both so should i sell the landrover and use the funds to purchase the rangie
your opinions please

I love the Series III's and the ones I've owned have always gone where I want to go. But if you plan on covering any large road distances to get to the trails, the rangie would be best, am guessing its a Series I, I love those too

The main limitation with the Stage 1's is actually the springs. The army specified them for carrying heavy loads, not good 4WDing. A set of parabolic springs and long travel shocks improves them dramatically. If your one is reliable and runs well, then you're away. You can get a set of 7.50/16 SAT retreads fairly cheap. If you take the inlet manifold restrictor out they also go a bit better. And you get to drive around in a classic mad max landie.
By comparision, the rangie has nice coil springs and that will make it go where a standard Stage 1 won't. But - 1976 rangies normally need new springs, new shocks, recovery points, and the bodies take hits more easily when 4Wding (just ask a rangie owner about the indicators...)
The p76 will have heaps more grunt than the Stage 1 though. check it for rust everywhere - sills, door mounts, firewall, rear floor, tailgate...
If either one has a major fault (transfer case or rust or something very spendy) then go with the other one.
If you are wise, go find one that someone has already done up for 4WDing and buy that.

that is why i'm thinking about the rangie it already has recovery points on it a good set of tyres i checked underneath for rust the outriggers were fine and the rear cross member looks good unlike the first range rover i bought. the sills are also in good condition as well as the tailgate.
it isn't running at the moment but i think it is a small problem it did start and sounded good but then it died after only a couple of seconds. i think i have a fair idea what the problem is but i don't want to tell the guy what it is cos then he might fix it and i'd have to pay more.
the other advantage to me buying a range rover is i have the remains of one taking up space in my fathers workshop so i do have some parts already and worst comes to worst if i stuff it totally i can get one of those dakar kits from the UK they look so mean. the only thing that i would need to purchase for it would be a winch but i don't really need one when starting out in a club situation.
