anyone know what you have to do to use cooking oil in a diesel engine i have about 40l a week that i can get from work that is used in the deep fryers is there anything that i need to do to it to put it into my diesel and what are the pros and cons of using bio diesel

i have a bio diesel set up at home to make 60 liters at a time. my hilux 2.4lt ran fine on it. i got all my info from http://www.journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_mike.html

get yourself a mecedes diesel then all you need to do is let it settle and filter it before using putting in in the tank

i use bio in the perjio and i find the motor is a lot quiter and i have more power down low. and the smoking problem that i did have, has gone

the motor has done about 5 years hard 4x4 and i have wound up the boost to 12 psi.
the motor is breahing hevly due to the rings being well on there way out

Brief answer: Get a second tank, heat the oil and use a solenoid switch to change fuels. The oil has to heat up to "thin it" to same viscocity as dieso. I'm just converting my terrano now using the engine coolant to heat the tank and fuel line, and it's a fairly straight forward exercise.
Long answer: I would strongly recommend a filtering process that will regulate/reduce the acidity and moisture content of the oil before you pour it into your expensive engine. It may be simpler to set up a trade with a local tallow collector and swap your 40 litres for some filtered oil? Check out the book "From the fryer to the fuel tank" at the library, lots of good back ground info. The Government agency EECA has released some info on this and it's quite negative. There are plenty of success stories around NZ and the world where people are clocking up the 15K + on vegie oil. They are the careful ones. There's plenty of muppets who have blown their garages up too! The folks in charge at the EECA are not going to make it easy for veggie-burners in the future so get onto it now!! Check out Trademe and a bloke on there selling his instruction book for $30. There's a few dodgey folks on there charging the earth for parts you can get yourself a a tenth the price, just shop around. Good luck, and if you want more info I 'll give you all I can for free, it's all out there any way, just takes time to find it!

x2 reading this "From the fryer to the fuel tank" Its good and easy to read.

i know its an old thread but i'll post this anyway....

much better off to convert it to bio fuel than to use straight vege oil. the vege oil leaves lots of deposits inside the injection pump and rotary pumps in particular do not last all that long.

i havn't caught with the guy, but i have heard of one users who blew pistons due to bio fuel. my guess is that it still had caustic soda in the fuel. ie poorly made batch.

just be aware that you may be saving a few $$$ for several years but that all goes down the drain if you have to rebuild the motor or injection pump.

So inline injector pumps are fine as they get there lube from the engine, but rotary injector pumps get their lube from the diesel. . . and cooking oil has no lube in it.

so. . . .Wouldnt it make sense if cooking oil SVO WVO doesnt have any lubricating propertys in it to put a splash of oil in there??

Kerosene ( Jet A1 )
Kero is just diesel but am told not to run it in my diesel engine as its got no lubrication???

Do you only need the lube for the injector pump??? once you get past the injector pump does the lube problem matter?

Also if this is the case kero ( Jet A1 ) would be fine in a engine with an inline injector pump with no problems???

cooking oil has far more lube than diesel does. that not what causes problems with rotary pumps.
i don't know inline very well but rotary use fuel pressure to alter the timing. cooking oil is a lot thicker so it causes a few problems with timing. also a big problem is all the crap it leaves behind inside the pump.


you need lube for injectors as well as pump. using kero or just watering down diesel with kero will cause sticky injectors. injectors sticks open and it burns a hole through the piston.

dunno if would work but how bout putting 2-stroke oil in fuel.
I have been running 2t oil in normal deisil as it adds more lube ability of the fuel as the low sulphr fuel we get now.
Have found it makes a real differnce in how the truck goes.
This would be benifical if running jet A1 in their diesil. Might help stop the injectors from sticking

i've heard of all sorts of weird concoctions.
eg kero mixed in with used engine oil.
2t with kero/a1 probably wouldn't be enough lube.
