???diffs???
hi to all,
i have often wonderd about lockers, back in the day me and mates would blow a diff in the car and would weld the spiders and be back rolling again with more reliable 2wheel burnouts than ever before and never once blew a welded diff!
now on this site ive only read about 1 truck with a welded diff and it wasnt up and running yet,
so, any1 who has welded the spiders on thier trucks and got away with it or had troubles please share your story, or your mates,
cheers

yeah so did i ,was the the only way of doing good donuts back when limited slip diffs cost the same as the car and there wasnt many avaliable either.my scudo diff will be welded shortly when i do my axle seals , we used to take a 2wd corrola wagon through 42 traverse when the track was bad , had a welded diff ,12inch datsun mags with 25 inch quad tyres running about 5 psi, the same car went all through the tracks up there, i am all for welded diffs . cheers

hey mate, yeah i agree with you a welded diff is a easy cheep option but wnat tires are you running?? because if you are going to drive it even half a hour to and from your muddy play ground the tire wear will be interesting. and i wouldent weld the front. ive had lokkas in front an rear and they disengage but are still a pain in the a#$e.
i was weld the rear but watch ur tread.

I have a welded rear in my suzuki
I dont know what everyone moans about. The small price you pay in reduced steering is nothing compared to off road performance increase. The only time it matters is if you do trials. In the bush you pretty much dont even need a steering wheel you just follow the ruts. When I had the orig motor tended to understeer a bit but with v8 on front cant notice.
My cruiser has the factory diff locks that never want to engage/disengage so i just put them both in most of the time. stops you cross axling out all the ruts as well.

Don't do it to the rear if you use it on the road!!! Do it to the front...BECUASE if the front is welded as soon as you disingage the front diff (eg. go back to 2wd for on the road) and disengage the front hubs the locked front does not give any problems. Don't do it to the rear as you tyres will wear out very quickly its not legal and it's very hard to drive. I had the front welded on my old nissan safari and I only every had a problem with it once, that was wen i was in 4x4 and drove on some tarceal and the powersteer belt started to slip. i just disengaged the hubs untill i was back on dirt etc and it was fine again. If you do not have power steering it would not be wise to weld the front....

wot type of truck have you got? find some cheap diffs and weld them up see how it goes. have heard of people using lead or something like that so that you can remelt it to get it out of the diff if you dont like it. or even if you know some one with a blown diff with stuffed spiders you could get that for cheap.

every1 has an opinion and im still intrested in wot ppl think, i still need 2 finish truck get cert and wof b4 locking anything, any info b4 then much apreciated

didnt realise you wanted to drive it on road. I never drove it on road but i do a-frame it on road. I tow it with road tyres on back and then swap muddies on when i get there. I think i loose about a mm of tread every time i tow it say to coromandel and back. so yeah tire wear is heavy and it also handles bad especially in wet.
If you have front hubs and your doin everything really cheap yeah weld front diff, just not as fun.
It will make your front steering REALLY hard.
