Look for rust in the rear floor (cargo area), thats a lot of miles on their salt roads. Will find some other info I had somewhere....

make sure its had the cambelt done (should of had a modification done back in UK, they had alignment issues and threw the cambelt off)

Check for rust around alpine windows (long oval ones up high). Bound to have the odd rust prevention feature underneath (oil leaks) Not hard too get seals replaced and believe it or not they wont leak (never had a drop from my 91 V8 I owned a while ago). Also round cargo area glass, waist seals on the four doors (run along the bottom of the window). Behind the rear bumper. Inside the front guards against the firewall. Not such a big problem with NZ new ones, but being that its from UK....

Search the net and land Rover Forums, theres bound too be other things..
They are not as bad as people make them out too be (those that moan or bitch about them have usually never owned them  )

is it sold vin'ed and registered? My mate brought an imported defender and they wouldn't vin and register it because of the amount of corrusion in the chassis

having said that he's been driving it around Wellington for a couple of years now with only the yellow UK plates on it and I don't think he's ever got a ticket in it yet

well rust may not be such a concern, but check timing belt history and all the usual issues you would with any normal car. For a manual diesel that is a good price if it does sell for between $3 - 3.5k

I had a look at that truck a month or so ago - they wanted $4995 at that time (it was on TradeMe at that price too) - That was too much for what it was. The interior is VERY tatty & the rear floor was piss wet thru - no major rust probs tho. It had apparantly been owned by a car yard in Taupo so I suspect it has done a fair bit of towing. These motors are good but my concern is if the interior is that bad how much maintainace have they done to the motor :?: :?: :?: So I walked away
- As lilpig said if was $3500 it'd prob be worth it (but remember if the motor does lunch itself you're up for another $2K to replace it (unless you chuck in a V8 for sweet F all))
