ARB Air Locker for Hilux

Post by suzolla »

Hi,
I am going to buy an ARB locker RD23 for my surf front beam from the States, price seems to be much better than from Aussie. Can get cheap freight but may take upto a month to get here, is anyone else interested in getting one at the same time, landed cost would be about $1200.
Or does anyone know were a cheaper one available.
Planning to order tomorrow or Monday.

Where are you getting it from? I have a few things to get from the land of bombs and terrorists... and was also thinking of either an ARB or one of Brian Howatts lockers if hes still making them... anyone?

Anyone know the pricing? And would they be better than the ARBs? Last I heard they were able to unlock under load, which the ARBs won't do...

Suzolla, are you going ARB for any particular reason?

I heard $800 for the hydrailic locker???? (dont quote me on that though), you supply the lsd diff (he does not recomend these for non rally trucks). Not sure on pricing on his other type of locker sorry. A mate of mine just bought a d class rally truck with brians lockers in them and they work very well.

Just chucked an ARB in the front of mine and love it, they make a world of difference.

Hi Steve,
Was getting from the States as they seem to be the cheapest.

Didn't know Brian did one, was only aware of ARB other than genuine toyota for a selectable locker.

TJM also do an airlocker. Im not sure on pricing though.

Steve, for a howat locker you have to have the housing modded etc, thats for a ball bearing one.

Someone mentioned he won't fit them to road-going vehicles tho? I'd rather spend my $$$ here in NZ if I can, and I've yet to hear anyone say something negative about anything Brian builds...

Failing all else I guess I'll throw some money in with Tim and buy ex-USA...

You also may be waiting awhile to get a howat locker as he is usually very busy.

I think wacko may know a bit more about howat lockers??

Haven’t read much about these so the answer maybe obvious, but why aren’t these recommended for road registered vehicles?

Cheers

done a little more research... for one of his clutch type lockers, you need to supply him with an lsd centre, and for his ballbearing lockers i think you need to supply an extra set of spider gears. still not sure on pricing, but from what i have heard you will blow an 80 series cv before you damage the locker. also not sure on why/if he doesnt like to install them in road trucks.

switch. the ballbearing ones use a hydro ram to activate (on the one i saw) and the clutch type usually use a lever. im not sure if there are other ways they activate tho. but definatly NOT auto lockers.

I think the reason why he doesnt want to install them into road trucks is that if something goes wrong on the highway and someone gets hurt, theres going to be lawyers knocking on his door.
