Hi guys, I have a 1989, dbl cab hilux Which has had the origional 2.8 (3l) diesel (dead) replaced with a 3 litre (5L) engine

I am in need of replacing my tyres which are 31' kumhos and plan on going up in size to either 32x11.5xr15 or 33x12.5xr15

My question is would the 33's be to big for the engine and make the gearing too tall?

What are you using the truck for? Tyres aren't (well, they SHOULDN'T be) look-good accessories... if you're using the truck on the road or towing a lot, stick to 31's... if you're doing a lot of offroading go 33's

You might get some rubbing with 33's so also be prepared to do a little panel modification around the footwell area (a gentle beating with an 8lb sledge will fix it )

It's more like a massage........ with an 8lb sledge hammer .

The 5l will have no problems pushing along 33" boots, although you will notice that the gearing is different. As Steve said, the 31" boots if towing or doing lots of hill work, 33"s for a capable 4wd truck.

Thanks for the input guys, the tyres will be on Desert rat rims and used for 100% off road, with the exception of getting to the off road

I will save the Kumhos on mags for day to day road driving and then replace them with a "civilian" tyre when they are to far gone

If you spend the coin now on good quality tyres, you will not need 2 sets.
Good mud tyres like bfg mud terrains etc (well a lot of guys on here call them mud tyres, I call them all terrains ) will give 75k - 100k kms of wear.

good point but the wife also drives it occasionally so don't really want her driving a truck with bad road manners

Would ya consider wrangler MTR a quality tyre, they have been highly recommended by some local mud chuckers as a good choice and i can get em for a decent price

BFG muds and Wrangler MT/Rs are not bad-manners tyres... you'll find them both very easy-driving on the road... and 2 sets is a major PITA IMHO... I had two sets... they lasted about 2 changes before I got sick of doing that... now I just run Simexes everywhere

I run 33 MTR's on the Safari which is a daily driver, and have no problems with ill handling.

Thats because safaris handle like pigs from factory, so you wouldnt notice the difference

yea from some brands of tyres it would be easily possible

Cooper have a 60,000 k guarantee on their mud tyres and the fitters expect them to surpass this considerably

ive just got around to putting 33inch mtrs on my hilux ( thanks davem ). i still have the 2.8 and its not as bad as i thort it would be. yes theres a bit of rubbing when flexing. yes the gearing is all different and takes a while to get used to but the handling is just as good if not better. i guess its cos the track is wider.

but deffinatly go the 33's. youll love them and they make so much difference in the good stuff!

Go the 33's, and for the price, I'd go for MTR's.
I drive the hippo like a car, and the tyres have handled it all suprisingly well. Haven't had a problem with them even in the wet, whereas I've had BFG's let go on me in the wet and put me into a fence

If I can get some (no MTR's in stock) or find another brand at a reasonable price. Might go Creepies yet. (sorry for the hijack )

yeh im gona have to agree with steve on this one,ive been runing 2 sets of tyres for bout a year now and its geting dam anoying ,so like steve ive given up and am just gona stick with the one set,and ill trow in the muds i run are 33 bfg muds and like its been said by others i also find they drive fine on the road,wider trak makes my hilux sit beautifuly,but i can also vouch that they do sometimes let go in the wet (2l petrol manual),i do have a heavy foot tho and do go for gaps,but yeh, just my 2c worth
