Safari clutch, which one?

Post by DaveM »

Looks like the clutch is on its way out, so time to look for a new one.
After something fairly heavy duty, that could handle running a turbo if I get round to finding one at a good price.

Any ideas? I've been told Terrain Tamer are a good clutch, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, how long should it take a mechanic to do a job like this? (TD42 )
Have to try to budget for it

Cheers,
Dave

 Its a massive job. Took all day to get mine done, $1200 later.

Just use a Daiken clutch or something generic like that, but for the Turbo modle Safari if you think you are going to go that way in the future.

IMHO the branded clutches (Terrain Tamer etc etc ) are like bying a labled pair of Jeans

We fitted a Daikin "Safari Tuff" clutch to Az's old truck, and I assume its still going strong. Available from BNT, just haggle them down on price.

Another option is 4-Terrain ( http://www.ciperformance.com.au/fourterrainpage.htm ) which has gotten a strong following in AU. It uses a composite friction plate so gives you the best of both worlds for driveability and performance....not sure who NZ distributer is, but I will be looking at this in the next few months.

Heres the contact info for the NZ distributor for the 4terrain:
Auckland New Zealand
40 O’Rorke Rd
Penrose Auckland NZ
Tel: +649 589 4151
Fax: +649 589 4152

I've been told to check out the xtreme outback option too, as they seem to be getting a good reputation in oz too, but in the end it'll come down to price, especially with the labour I'm likely to be charged.

Its a 6hr job to replace the clutch. Allow extra $50 for machining of flywheel. Shouldn't be any other surprises, but make things easier by removing driveshaft for PTO winch, give it a decent clean underneathe etc. Gearbox is one heavy SOB, so its worth paying someone else to deal with.

We did it in the race truck during Superwinch in a bit over 2hrs, but was 2 of us doing it.

My driver is a diesel mechanic and has done the odd one in the past. I just keep out of his way and hand him the tools. Was done on a hoist too which makes it easier.

Hey 3rnzir, Is that $500 clutch for a turboed safari? Will it last behind a more power than factory TD42?

They claim it will. It has conventional organic facing on one side of the plate which gives you good feel and driveability, and kevlar pulp facing on the other side for plenty of bite. Its facings are cushioned for better take-up too.

They reckon its good for 1200Nm of torque.
