Looking at this Surf 4 sale, should I buy at this price?

Post by 4wdnewbie »

Hi there
I'm looking at this 1994 3 litre Toyota Surf. Recent Jap import, not driven in NZ. Has 71K on the clock. Haven't done an AA pre purchase yet. The asking price is $14000. Is this a good price or too high? Naturally I'd want to pay less than this but need to make sure I'm not paying more than I should.
Also, does anyone know what the mark up of 4wds that dealers slap on their prices? thanks.

geez, to me that sounds rather high. i would assume at a dealer it should be more around the 10 - 11k mark.

as for mark ups, a dealer will always try to get as much as they can for a while then normally there is a set mark up that they make to cover cost etc. if your looking for a truck like that, why not try private sale. will save you alot of money that could be used on modifications etc!

Car yards will normally put a few thousand on their vehicles.
If its through a dealer, they could easily drop the price.

Well, part of the problem is that here in Chch manual (sorry forgot to mention that) are hard to find in chch. There are plenty of automatics, at a slightly lower price. But I'm more keen on manual. So, obviously, what with the low supply of manual 4wds, the price tends to be a bit higher.

Well, I'm more keen on a 4wd that hasn't been driven in NZ - in case it may have been thrashed. I'm guessing the japanese don't do off roading?
I suppose, I could wait, and if the car doesn't get sold, I could offer a lower price - but if there's anyone out there also looking for manual 4wds....so, it's a bit of a gamble.

Thanks 4wdnuts. I'm very keen to be patience and wait for a better deal. Dealers I have spoken to all say the same thing - that manuals are hard to find - and so naturally hold the price up.
The reason why I asked about mark ups is that I needed to try to somehow bargain for a lower price. Sure, they say they need to run a business, but I gotta wonder how much do they really need to make.

picked mine up for 7 pretty tidy but 200k's with a fresh recon, looked at lots around town for between 9 and 12 depending on k's condition and auto or manual, they do pop up at good prices but seem to get snached up quickly keep an eye on the yards if you want to go the dealer option and im sure you'll find something cheaper than what your looking at,
also depends on what your using it for you pay alot less for one's with not perfect paint ect but if your going bush it probably shouldn't worry you..

like most have said, that sounds pricey

keep an eye out abit longer and youll fing a bargin, and you kick your own arse later down the track.

my olds had a 1990 surf, they paid 32,000 when it was NZ new about 16 years back, they would be luck to get 4k now.
