Gidday all I'm after info from anyone whos done this conversion as I have a written off, low k's surf sitting here with one... and we are considdering swopping it into a mates 2.8l 3L hilux

The surf is an auto with a cack handed front drive shaft so if there is an adapter plate out there we've got an auto bellhousing

we haven't bought the wreak yet... so I'd rather get as much info before I start stripping bits  and commit to buying it

Cheers Reece

you will have to use the 1kz motor and auto/manual gearbox as the 2.8 gearbox is not the big box, and if you manual pump your injector pump
you will not have to wire up the computer cost about $1000 to do your pump it means less electrial bit to go wrong.

Suprasurf swapped a 3ltr turbo diesel and auto into a widebody ln 130 (2lt). He got around wiring issues by swapping in the whole wiring loom. Only other issue I recall was that engine mounts didn't line up.

Guy at work put 3 litre turbo ex a surf into his 2.4 double cab hilux. used surf auto/transfer, had a few issues with wiring , had to do body lift as well so it fitted under bonnet (intercooled as well!) f**@k does it pull , can take some pics if you want?? I'd say it would definitly have handling issues over 100mph thru......... :D

why can't you run an aftermarket ECU ( computer ) that has fuel side only , or even use normal one & just us the fuel side ? heaps of different ECU's around & the fuel only model's are generally less $$$ , should be able to get one under 1G ( EMS, Wolf , etc ) & that way you won't need the factory loom & the hassles ( Alot of perfomance jap import petrol engines are done this way & sometimes use stock ECU for idle control only )

im runing a 1 kzte & a r151f trans in a 91 ln 106 double cab ,i did this conversion back in july so far its running sweet as
its certenly given the old dc a new lease of life .the swap was a peace of piss , the hardest part was finding the rolled manual 94 surf , i swaped every thing over wireing loom, heater , dash , front seats , carpet the works ,even the rear brake shoes & wheel cylinders there basicly the same truck back to the b pilar , i did this hole swap & all it cost me was a
new exaust , still got the smile on my face , very happy .

Just finished mine this week but failed cert caz i didn't have two drive shaft hoops on the rear shafts :? . but i agree very easy conversion only problem i hit was the air con as i swapped all the surf stuff over but the surf air con radiator doesn't fit in tho the d/c chassie so have to get new pipes made up. the best bit was with my new 33"s on my speedo is smack on as i tested it with my gps  so i brought so hoops off trade me just waiting for them to turn up. then i go to queenstown next week and put it all to the test

nice, did you go auto or manual , yea cert is one thing ill have to do ,before some one picks up on it , as far as air con goes i just ditched mine , but i think you need to swap over the front radator support panel for the air con because the surf one is different then you can run the big surf head lights & grill as well . i run 32 x 10.5 x15 simexs on mine 2in body lift
you will be pleased with the power .

went with the manual :D i'm not a fan of auto's every one i know with one overheats when offroad. as for the air con i'm going to use the 2.8 radiator and use the surf for the rest of the system. only getting cert to fend of the police and keep insurance company happy.

I done the same thing to my 84 doublecab, used the auto also. auto is around 80mm longer than standard hilux box so driveshafts had to be changed. Bodylifted mine, mounts on diesel hilux chassis had to be moved back 2 inches for the motor to go in. Put the surf speedo cluster into the 84 dash, wired it in with the factory computer. Hard part is the wiring but being a sparkie helps. Manual fuelpump trucks iv heard about have the same power but have been told fuel economy is worse. Great combination in the older hiluxs as they weight less than the surfs.

uboat.

i've been told you can bolt the 2l-t mechanical pump on to the 1kz-te motor to get around using the computer but don't know of the effects on power or economy so i have also kept the computer and have gone up to 33" tyres and seem to get the same fuel economy(only done 200kms since install) as my old 2.8 on 31"s but more power  . doing a trip to queenstown soon it will be interesting to c how much fuel i use.

I waved this project some time ago
heres the info I sorted on this
The motor to get if you want to do a manual conversion is the manual, if you have a motor that came with the auto box the engine computer is no good as it needs the feeds from the auto box to work and there is no aftermarket option that I could find, there are a couple of options tho if you have an auto boxed motor first is to run the auto box but the standard box that comes with these drops the front drive shaft on the passanger side  but you can swop a transfercase off an auto prado or surf (Non KZ model  ) and that will drop the front DS on the drivers side, you will still need the loom and instrament cluster (did you do this mod U Boat ??)
If you want to run a manual instead of the factory auto you can bolt a mechanical fuel pump on off the 2lte, I think it was the "e" model, only found 1 guy who had done this and he said it wasn't a simple mod and he was really disapionted in it way less power and economy than the EFI
the other option is to find a blown manual version and take the computer loom cluster etc off, I didn't bother pricing up a new stock comp  toyota charge an arm and a leg for that sort of thing, know of one replaced on insurance cost $16000 and no I havn't put an extra 0

at that price i have a spare auto one if any insurance company's want it for $15999   .

just wondering if anybody shifted the computer up so as not to get it water damaged in the event of a deep river crossing? as i have already had water that deep once and am a bit paranoid now :?

Do you have any more info on this swap.Ive been told a 2.8 pump will bolt up as well. I have a 1KZ-TE and want to get rid of the ECU. I'm sick of intermittent electrical faults related to the Pump / Engine electrics etc.(Might have something to do with Mud Bogs   )
Would be much happier with cable operated pump, much less to go wrong.

i have also been told the 2.8 fuel pump will fit but it has no compensation for boost like the 2l-te pump so you'll have to wind the fuel up and end up blowing heaps of smoke off idle and still be down on power and econmy is my guess. unless you can get you're hands on a mechanical 1kz pump the 2l-te is the next best option.

sorry about this mate but it was too long ago, he told me the details of what he had done after he'd told me it was crap on power and economy so I wasn't really listening at that piont  as for his name I can't remember that either, I got it second hand from one of the guys I was doing work for at the time and I havn't seen him since I moved over a yr ago

You guys are talking of going for a 2LTE pump  , I think you mean a 2LT , that is the earlier model as the 2LTE is also EFI . Read Bulletproofs build post early on in his build he talks of a mechanical pump with a turbo compensator fitted.
If Richard is reading this he may enlighten you.
