I think it has something to do with the transmission :?

holds the 'gear' a little longer than usual [I think] :?

Brian is correct,

It it part of the electronic transmission control, it holds the lower gear longer giving quicker take offs and getting you to the higher speeds quicker.

The tradeoff is that it uses more fuel.

I leave mine in eco most of the time on the road,

Some times use it off road ... Not sure what difference it makes in this situation.

Would love to know what others do.

It makes a huge difference when towing through hills, stops the auto jumping around all the time at the wrong time.

I don't bother using mine on-road unless im climbing hills and want a little more power just hangs in gears for a little longer assuming your using drive and not selecting through the gears, use mine off-road a bit, i like the rev's to spin the wheels and clear the tyres, also leave overdrive turned off off-road cheers..
