Really solid rigs, dont really like the 2.4 motor much though. Easy to repower with the 3.4 or a six cylinder. Easy to mod, and plenty of bits available for the trusty cruiser too.

Will be a good solid truck to learn in and as wopass said the mods will come later (realy fast)

Er, not really. A 3.4 definitely aint a bolt in job, & a 6 cyl would be a major as the engine bay is only designed for a 4 cyl. A lexus V8 however...
You're right about the 2.4 though, a bit gutless & even a rebuilt one is a bit of a liability, although some run forever, particularly if they're in a manual like this one.
Probably still a good 1st truck though if you could get it for 3.5 - 4k. The later model 93/94 ones have the much better 3 litre turbo motor but cost lots more too.
Mods, get some decent bumpers/bullbars on it, A toyota PTO winch can be modified to fit, springs & shocks...
Here's my effort on a similar wagon:

bloody good trucks,
just give it a good scour underneath for rust/evidence of rust repairs. rust never sleeps look out for rear wheel arches and bottom of doors and.....everywhere....to be specific.
also, the turbos on those motors seem to die, and they have almost no torque at low revs which is a big prob off road. every surf ive seen in pick a part has a siezed turbo.
make sure you keep a couple grand spare with anything you get.
the old bj70s have a 3.4 with the massive ct-26 turbo and heaps of grunt

I think this is where cruiser owners sign in
your first 4wd is like buying your first car... you just dont really know whats going to be right for you've owned a few.
Cruisers are pretty robust and reliable, the one your looking at seems pretty tidy so if the price fits and it feels right
might pay to check out potential rust repairs etc if its been re-painted though

That one is a good choice. It has the coil suspension so will ride better than the old ones. Ditto on the 2.4 though. A mate of mine runs a holden 3.8 in one of these. It goes really well.

Some of them came with front and rear diff locks too. I don't know the model option though i.e Lx or Ex etc.
