I have just bought a 1985 Landrover 110 V8 - is it common for people to upgrade the engine to a later model with EFI?

yup, a 3.9 from a disco is a common drop in. most 3.5's have high miles and are down in power , you really notice the difference with a later motor.

Thanks - what else can be done to easily improve performance? I imagine extractors/exhaust/air filter would help? And is there a computer upgrade that can be done on the disco motor and would it be worth it on such a heavy truck?

Almost anything can be done, it all depends on how deep your pockets are.
You need to work out what you want to achieve and go from there. Certainly the later v8's can be tuned or even use another system such as megasqurit, link or similar.
Power wise the 3.9 efi has a lot more over the 3.5 carby motors
Headers are always a good start and also flow the heads. Rovers v8's tend to be restrictive in flow as standard.

We are using it for a promo car so want it to be easy to drive on-road, but also want to be able to take it hunting/fishing/surfing in the weekends so want to be able to power through paddocks and mud etc. I have about 5k to spend?

You could probably get a 4.6 in for under 5k.
Were you wanting manual or auto?

may be best to get a wrecked rangie or disco II and take the whole motor/box/transfer case.

would much work have to be done in regards to chopping up the interior to fit the auto?

Been done plenty of times before - from memory you need to adapt the transmission tunnel - someone was even making and selling adapted ones for a while overseas
locally try ringing Tim at Bramble Downs 09 8109894 I think he's built one before - and Ely at Forward specs too
Try searching some of the landrover specific forums you'll probably find a build up wih pics eventually

I had a 3.5 v8 in my hilux for 5 years and in the last year and a half I had a 3.9 motor with su carbs on it and you can just not compear the motors for power , and out of all the rover v8s the 3.9 is the best.
