Standard?

I'd say 5500 but it depends how well you want it to last :D They will rev higher of course...

I'm sure someone will say more thou....

yeah about 5500. I don't normally take any notice of the revs (maybe thats why its starting to blow a bit of smoke now) But one day I was blasting up a slippery slope full noise I did happen to look down and it was sitting at 5500 and did'nt go much further (for about 30 secs  )

Same with mine, just a little past 5500, but mine is blown smoke at those revs as some have born witness to. But to remedy that I have a pair of double valve spring heads which im going to port (20 bucks each off trademe) and a crower race cam (100 bucks off trademe) to go in her, so hopefully she will be able to get to 7k :D

109 V8 Upgrade

hey, i am wanting to put a 2 or 4 barrel Carb onto my 3.5 109 ex army hehehe, and was just wondering what the advantages of either are??

I have heard that the 2 barrel's are easier to tune and keep tuned but the 4 barrel can be more economic??

Any idea's?? also any places i can get the carb (one that is ok off road) and intake manifod?? Last but not leased, if i did go a head with this, would mean more power, but will need brake upgrade, any ideas on this too??

cheers, guy's

Havn't those army v8's got restrictors in the intake manifold?
Take those for starters. Then I would stick with the standard SU's as they are much better off-road than any 2 or 4 barrel.
The spreadbore 4 barrels (Rochester for example) can achieve pretty good economy but need a manifold to match. Most 4 barrel manifolds I have seen on Trade Me to fit Rover V8 engines are pretty expensive.
I would have thought that by the time you buy a manifold and carb you could just about buy a fuel injected set-up out of a Range Rover or early Discovery. More power, better economy and runs at any angle, even upside down.

hi, yea i have the restrictors out and run a ford v8 electronic dizzy. I had thought about fuel injection but the army landies are 24volt systems, so i would have to do some electrical work too, and deffinantly not keen on that, (hate all those cords/wires and that...), you rekon the SU's pretty good?? Might have to stick with them, just wanting to know what other avenues are possible!

My fuel economy is about 22L/100kms?? Or about 230kms per 50L tank of 95octane. I do give it a bit of stick on the 'go fast' pedal a bit, Is this figure about right for these motors??

cheers,
gary

i have a 450 holley on mine with a modifyed intake manifold that i made might not be the best but was cheap and i got a lot more power out of it and i dont have flooding probs at all but it is a new carby, i would use a 4bbl if i was you bit more fuel tho depends on how ya drive, what ford dizzy did you use and why didnt you use a rover one??

See the blue dizzy at front of motor, was told it was a Ford one from an automotive engineer, I got it like that when i bought it from the army auctions with it on. I guess Summit Engineering (Rotorua) probly put it on when they recond the motor for the army.

Can't get over the size of the alternator on those army ones. That alone must suck quite a bit of horsepower and wouldn't do the fuel economy any good.
I get about 400km out of 70 litres of fuel in my Disco. Most economical on a long trip has been 450km out of about 70 litres.
Just fitted electric fans, makes an enormous difference to the noise the engine generates (can hardly hear it at idle and it just purrs at speed) and has got to help fuel economy and power.

I wonder if the blue dissy is something to do with the rev limiter that aparently the Amry V8's had.

And the carb's in the stage 1 V8 series 3's (what the army ones are) had a restrictor in each of the carbs to keep power down. Each restrictor has 4 holes about 15mm across for the v8 to breathe through :?

yeah could be not sure tho,is there anything to watch out for with the rover motors apart from oil pick up. is there any easy mods or so on i could do?

i have heard some people reckon u chuck a 3.9L cam in and that beefs it up a bit.

Headers too help out a bit and of course 4 barrel carb etc...

As for rev limiter, i dont think mine has it, i have really given a bit of stick climbing out of a stream in short ratio and it started the old valve bounce, best not to do this. I talked to a chap who said they had some rovers in Zimbabwae and he said the last thing you need is a governed Landy while your being shot at!!!
