crikey!

i got a 1990 with 33's, 4.3 diffs and no turbo!

yes its a bit slow but its not a racing car. if you want more power maybe fitting a snorkle, larger exhaust and winding the injector pump will help.
if all this is no good then fit a supra motor like some on here have

i cant think of anything else at the moment you could do to boost power. i think it might be a case of putting up with what you have or doing an engine conversion

2.4t more power

I have a LN130 fitted with a 2.4 turbo, I have fitted 3 washers on both bolts in between the relief valve on the turbo. I use my vehicle for towing and it runs alot better. it is however your call whether you do this. The only problem I have is when you rev it out to much the boast light goes from green to red, but otherwise no other difference is felt. the light resets itself after you switch off an restart. I have been running my wagon like this now for 4 months.

That boost warning light is there for a reason... you're overboosting the engine, which can have catastrophic effects. Especially on an engine that is widely recognised as being mechanically weak. I certainly wouldn't recommend doing what you're doing - however I understand how tempting it is to get more power and how hard it would be to go back now you've had it
As for a 2.8TD - thats about as good as it gets in the L-series engines... I can't think of anything else that will make any difference... your next step is really going to be a repower - a 1KZ would be a noticeable huge improvement in the diesel arena, or you're looking down the barrel of a petrol-sucker like a 1-or 2JZ or an older supra swap or maybe a 1UZ lexus V8 swap.
Any of those swaps is going to cost you tho... unless you have a spare $5k I'd get used to the 2.8TD

Diesel performance engines are only in their infancy, previously they were in Big Heavy trucks and were all about torque, the technology on them is so old they can still run on vegatable oil and old fish and chip oil and if you press enough peanuts peanut oil.
The newer diesel turbo's out of europe and Japan are far more complex and are much harder to get to run on anything other than pump diesel, this is because they have looked at the technology and tuned things better, if you want more power relyably then you need to do an engine swap, and most likley to a petrol. Sorry
Case in point the 1.8 Turbo VW Diesel out perform's the 2.4 turbo diesel toyota built, as for where fuel will end up I think Ethanol will be the answer we end up with as the petrol technology will not have to change much only the timing, rubber seals and quantities.
BTW the brand spanking new twin turbo V8 diesel in the new Landcruiser is pretty impressive but the cost of these new beasts and they are thirsty.

What about a lpg injection for the diesel, one way to more ponies. There's some good articles on here somewhere

If it was a naturally turbo'd engine I would have suggested this but a non turbo having been turbo'd putting LPG into it will cause more stress.
I would hate to have the head crack as these are prone to doing
