2.4 Turbo onto a 2.8l Hilux

Post by penetrator »

Hey guys picked up my new truck in the weekend a 1991 2.8l diesel double cab hilux ute. Seems to go ok and im pretty happy with it.

Im planning on doing the basic mods with it - snorkel, new lifted springs and shocks etc. One thing I have noticed from going from a V6 surf is the power difference  I have heard that it is possible to do a supposedly simple turbo mod for more power.

What i would like to do is get a good turbo off a 2.4l surf and install it on the new truck. I would do this at the same time as the springs and shocks etc and get it all sorted at once but what i want to know is is this an easy mod to do? does it make a lot of difference in power? are there any repercussions on the engine i.e. extra stress etc from putting a turbo on?

look forward to all the advice!

the manifold will bolt straight on so thats really easy. you will have a problem with heat so may want to run a larger exhaust at the same time to get rid of it quicker. you will also have to adjust the injector pump to poke out a bit more fuel to.

a few on here have done it so they will probably add to this :)

I had that setup on my ln106 hilux until last week when the motor cried enough, it went well, but killed the motor, I tend to think a 1kzte transplant if you like diesels or a supra motor if you like petrols would not be bad choices for a hilux if you want more power

so if you do the turbo conversion do you get the exhaust manifold from the 2.4 and bolt that on replacing the original 2.8 exhaust manifold? And then im guessing run a bigger exhaust pipe out to reduce the heat issues?

Im not really keen to bother if it is likely to kill or put extra pressure on the engine. I definitley want to stick with the diesel as i enjoy how little it costs to run this truck compared to the petrol and if the turbo idea might hurt the engine will be happy just sticking with it as is - after all it still gets me from a to b!

when you to new springs. look at going rears in the front and falcons in the back. philux on here went all new spings and shocks and it goes great on the road and flexes well in the front but is crap in the rear. the falcons seem to flex well and rears in the front will move the axel forward and you should hopefully be able to get 33's on without a body lift or trimming your guards. then some new nice long shocks and you are away laughing. ask others for more details, this is just what ive heard.

The early 2L-T turbo manifolds (61 series surf etc) don't fit. the ones from the later 2L-T, 2L-TE in the LN130 etc surfs fit on fine. You just need to re-arrange a few manifold studs. All the holes are there, just a case of unwinding the ones in the wrong place and screwing them back in where they need to be to line up with the turbo manifold. Pays to clean out the holes/thread first as they are usually full of mud/oil etc.
You also want to replace the exhaust manifold gasket with the Surf one too.
Also need to tap into oil cooler plate for oil feeds for turbo.
