Replacing a Hilux Surf Open Diff with a LSD?

Hi - have just joined, still waiting for registration approval but have a question in the meantime. I have a '92 Hilux Surf, 3L motor, and the most frustrating thing about what is a great truck is watching one rear wheel spin and the other doing nothing! Does anyone know if its possible and what it might cost to swap in an LSD for the rear. The front has ADD 'hubs'. Cheers Bob.

same sorta question

Hi Toyota friends, the LSD is a factory option in Toyota Surfs and a lot of imported vehicle had them fitted. Lift both rear wheels off the ground and turn one wheel if the other wheel turns in the same direction you have a LSD fitted. Remember a LSD is limited, if you had to buy one i would look at a locker . LockRight rear only about $900 . ARB air locker front & rear about $1800 each end. Hope this helps.

Hi Fellas - check out: http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

My truck is a G282 diff - this means it is 8inch gears (G), 4.3 gear ratio (28) and 2 pinion open diff (2). Bugger.

Smokey is right - lifting and spinning the rear wheels is a good test too, mine spin in the opposite direction to each other.

I think it is possible to get a 2nd hand diff, just need to make sure its an LSD you put in!

Cheers
Bob

Easy job guys. I just sold a 4.3 lsd fully recond for $500, but you should be able to get one cheaper. All hilux/surf rear diffs have the same diff head, the hiace vans are the same to, but some had 5.29:1 diffs which is the shit for big tyres
Give us yell if you need a hand, I might be able to find you an lsd centre and then just swap over the ring and pinion gears.

Easy job eh! I wouldn't know a pinion gear if it bit me on my... ;)

I was going to ask Lineside Auto if they have a diff, but I wouldn't know if they were selling me an 8inch, 4.3, and LSD...

If you could find an lsd centre, how much time/cost do you think it would take to swap them over??

Thanks very much
Bob

another nieve newguy question for ya's......... hope you dont mind

how much work (time as well) is involved in swapping the diffs over?
do you have to move entire axle back to get it out etc or is it a bolt out bolt in thing?

Bolt in job  Take your driveshafts off, pull the axles out then undo the 10 or so 12mm nuts on the diff head. You should be able to do the back in about 45minute. The front will take a bit longer.
Have fun :D

:D :D excellent!!!! i like the sounds of that!!!

thats good to hear aye, guy im hopefully gettin it off has two surfs making one; hes a mechanic so was offering to swap them for me $$$ .

Rear = undo the brake lines then the 4 nuts on each side which hold the backing plate to the diff housing, pull them out.

Front = remove hubs, remove the big nut which tensions the wheel bearing, then remove the bearing carrier - you'll have to take the calipar off at some stage - pull the axles out. ( this is for beam axle fronts, IFS models I have no experience with sorry)

the main reason lineside is so expensive is that they dont sell secondhand diffs, they only sell them if they have been fully reco'd.
if you can get a diff head that needs a little work i have heard that the diff shop in chch is fairly reasonable for rebuilding them, an exercise i will have to attack shortly, as alas my 70 series is a tad worn in that department :(

I've just reconditioned my rear diff. $190incl for the bearings etc (South Island Bearings) and about 4 hrs.
So I'd imagine that most mechanics would be around the 4-5 hundred mark to do the job.

Hey Conan, I just drove through Queenstown with a spare LSD on the trailer behind me yesterday... Oh, and if you are still thinking of the solid axle swap I might have the axle you need...

The diffs a 4.8 tho, and I came up with a cunning plan to use it in HiMuZu on the drive thru to Naseby so while I would have sold it yesterday I probably won't today unless the price is right :)

The last 2nd hand 4.3LSD I had I swapped for a whole single cab Hilux 4WD - which should give you an idea of what people will do to get one - they are a rare option in that ratio.

And as was already mentioned, while Lineside are expensive, they sell recon'd equipment with a warranty, and often have what you need when you need it, so its a trade off. They have a business to run, if you don't like their prices then buy parts of someone else, if you can find them.

Thats Mike (SupraSurf was his ID, god knows what it is now, I know he changed it) that has the detroits, although I don't know if he's got any left. Was geting another order sorted for them tho, so he'll have them soon enough.

Where is the devils staircase? I came from Ohai, round past the lake and turned right at Frankton... Was travelling through there late afternoon, early evening.

The axle is complete, but could use a rebuild (I'll sell you a rebuild kit at cost if you buy the axle, ask me off-forum about that :) although it would survive without it for a while anyway) - will sell it to you with the 4.3 diff to match your back one complete for $350 - gotta look after you after the diesel pump fiasco :D  Also have a power steer setup for solid axle if you don't want to go crossover.

Give me a shout on 021 637 600 if you want more info
