rust in 80 series?

Post by xorph »

My father is looking at getting an early to mid 90s 80 series tortoise,
just wondering how prone to rust these are? Ones Ive seen dont seem to have any rust at all!? :?

Family has had a 60 series for last 10 years and its gradually meeting its maker and disolving. Everything else just keeps chugging but ive spent about 3 weekends now cutting out and welding cancer.
Luckily he's a monopoly man and can afford a fancypantswagen to replace poor old schabbeswagen.
Also considering a Nissan Safari (ohh no Im gonna start a war! )
How are they like in terms of rust?

Old one's been to the beach about 20 times so that prob doesnt help, prob gonna do the same with the new one. :x

the only place i have seen rust in the 80's is around the bottom of the side rear windows, and it was only surface rust, but check the sunroof edges as well  and make sure the drains from the sunroof are not blocked.

fantastic wagon, comfy as to drive and very capable offroad

hey xorph.... what ever you decide to get, take it to a panelshop and spend some cash on getting it rust proofed properly..... in the long run
youll get a longer life out of what ever you buy......

most panel shops have the right gear to spray in sills (long spraying wands etc) it is cheaper to do yourself but you wont get in where you need it with spray cans etc

Cheers Ryan,
think im gonna buy a whole lot of fish oil spray cans and do the sills, archs and secret water traps like body mounts.
I have personally had horrendous luck with panel beaters and their love of bog...
Is there anything better than fishoil for that sort of thing that you know of?
