Inlaws are looking at a 1992 3.9 auto discovery for general off roading.
Apart from being thirsty, is there anything else wrong with these? Would only run 32's max I'd say.

they blow diffs....32's would be max, there a very capable offroader with coils allround and disc's front and rear as long as your not to harsh on the running gear and keep it maintained you should be sweet

Good luck running 32's under a Disco

Seriously though, a mate of mine has a Disco he uses for general offroad stuff, he's put a 50mm Scorpion Racing lift kit under it and cut the gaurds to fit his 31 X 10.5's under it. They still rub.

The kit came with new brake hoses, new front drive shaft, and all sorts of extra stuff that most vehicvles don't need when you only lift them 50mm. Makes you wonder.

Ya can't really do a body lift on them as easly as most vehicles, the seat belts are mounted to the chassis for starters, and there's other strange stuff.

Goes good though, "A Frame" rear works bloody well with the sway bar removed

I used to run 750/16 SAT's under my disco (31") - initially with just some body trimming



& later with a 50mm susp lift. Never even came close to breaking a diff but then I wasn't doing "hardcore" stuff in it. If they're goning to use it for "general" offroading then I'd say they'll find 31's plenty. The narrow 750/16's are ideal for most NZ tracks & like I said easy to fit to the disco's.

an english guy runs this in the club rear locka winch ,broke the drive to the rear wheels once when snatching a jeep

Im over Land Rover and selling mine before i really start losing money on it. I would stick with either something Jap to be honest.

Thats what I've told them, will keep looking for a cheap Safari for them.

Plus replacement parts are expensive with them being british. Also the electrics aren't that great either as well as things don't work as they are designed to.

Also having something that is not ful time 4wd will save alot in gas.

Disco parts are cheap - there's lots about and you can get them from the wreckers...
the 3.9 Auto is a good combo off-road - but I'd agree about the electrics. If you get the vanilla model, no airbags and few electrics they handle mud a lot better.
Just stick a mild spring lift in (move the rear springs to the front and some new ones in the rear) it's all you need for safari runs
If you have a real heavy right foot and want to do tough truck runs you will need to spend money on either toughening up the drivetrain on a Disco or getting some power out of a patrol - but it would be cheaper in both cases to buy someones truck they have already done up.
For safaris and most club work a Disco is fine but you will get hassled by japper owners even when you are recovering them!

Also with the V8 for example the exhaust gasket is not just one big gasket for each side its one per cylinder so they can charge you 8 times the price

new parts are cheap, especially service parts... the exhaust gasket you are talking about is $2 per one - new. Shit if $16 is gonna break the bank, perhaps 4x4ing aint for you

i had a 3.9 years ago as i thought would be good family wagon , what a unreliable piece of shit, i lost count of how many times my old man and brother said i told you so about buying it , and mine was 1 onr and nz new others probaly have had better luck but i would never touch another one.

I'd advise them to get a Jap 4WD.

Their son-in-law will obviously be hanging out to give them the "I told you so!" speech as soon as they break anything...
