Conway River 9-10 June 2007

Post by albundy »

About eight trucks headed off down the Conway on saturday afternoon after a jug or two at Waiau pub. I needed to tighten a front wheel bearing there but no problems otherwise. We pulled into the river bed about 3pm. Hubs locked and tyres deflated. Got a couple of k's downstream and Matt broke his rear shock mounts. Out came the bush welder. As it was getting on in the afternoon, half the party went on down to the campsite to gather wood and set up camp. It was just getting on dusk when we arrived and already the temp was close to 0. Fire built, tents set up and the other half of the party finally arrived. Beer came out, and some more, and even more. If you were within 1 metre of the fire it was very warm, anywhere else and it was well below zero.
Next day started with Tim replacing a CV. All done and underway by lunch. Not far downstream and Matt managed to get hung up trying to do more articulation on rocks- underway in no time after the careful placement of some more rocks. Then Matts springs started to give him curry, so it was off to find some wire to wire it all back together. Had some lunch and back underway again. Headed down towards the beach, some soft stuff, nothing to exciting though. Headed north along the beach to Claverly this time, nice drive. Decided to pump my tyres up on the beach, bad move as now I couldn't get off it. I was gouing to air back down but Kev decide to give me a tow out, albiet a slow one at that. managed to get the other stuck safaris off the beach and it was away home. Not far down the road and Matts truck finally gave up the ghost, along came a trusty Nissan safari to tow him back to Christchurch. All in all a very good weekend, plenty of broken toyoata bits and whole ones, and the trusty old Nissans coming through again. And before you all ask, no I didn't take any photos but plenty of the boys did.

What colour is Matt's truck these days? Saw a totally black surf being towed into christchurch last night.

Also saw three serious looking trucks in Rangiora at about 2pm. a Vit, Surf and one other. four guys were looking under the bonnet of the Vit. Apparently there were a heap of truck at the Rangiora Domain (Near Ashley river) in the morning

Matts surf is that metallic grey color and none of us were around Rangiora yesterday anyway.

I enjoyed the trip.......busted CV done on tree stump while trying to talk on RT. trucks goes from 2nd low cruising along to dead stopped instantly, both me and my son wearing seatbelts otherwise would have been injured for sure
