Hey guys, Im young as most of you know and pretty keen on hunting. Just thought i'd start this thread as a bit of a show and tell on what you have shot.


my first animal ever when i was about 13

I have also shot a few more goat and a hind for meat

heres a couple of dads trophys....



dads red



dads 22 point fallow buck

i hunt with a 7.62x39 with a burris scope
dad hunts with a .270 weatherby mk5 ultralight with a leaupold scope

that should get the ball rolling

I am at the other end of Mr O's timeline!!

Last trip out was into the Kaweka country, after an absence of nearly ten years.
Its a helluva walk, the two fotos are from vastly different times, but of the same area. NO the landrover DIDNT sell for $200

We crossed THAT little bump to get to HERE



But THIS was the result of some young fellers stupidity, I still have a few sausies left, I am rationing them!!

Bugger, I wish I had never found this thread, let alone looked at it! I hate hunting!

Not that you can't do it, I just won't look at the thread then I won't get upset! I dunno, even though I am from a country background, still can't come to terms with killing animals for the sake of it. I reckon there are some people in jail who would be better game than some of these cute wee animals! Let the doors open on some of the Max security joints and let everyone stand outside and take a shot! Would solve a lot of problems!!

Would be a cool thing to get out and about in the wilderness though, and I am certainly not knocking anyone or anything like that! I have just always had a soft side for animals. (Hence my love for Tiger Balm - He he he!!!)

I take it you don't eat meat........ . I know few hunters that shoot for the sake of it, unless its pest control. I recover as much meat as possible. vension and pork are regular on our families menu. It takes skill,effort,& a good 4wd certainly helps.Our nz backcountry is a magic place.Perhaps you'd like to see how 1080 kills game animals......... Hunting and 4wds go together, glad its been included in offroad express.

I agree. I do eat meat! I think that if the meat is used then it is perfectly acceptable, less stressful for the animals than going to the works! I just hate it how some people kill, photograph, then discard without using the meat in any way!

Good on you guys, I agree it is a great mix to have cool forums like this on here. (even though I may steer away from the dead animal photos! ). I think I may have to go and check out the fishing section! I love getting out for a fish on our boat.

great topic, two of my favourite interests! i've done plenty of smaller game hunting but only just getting into bigger stuff, if anyone's got any nice spots that combine the 4wdriving and hunting around canterbury let me no, im a bit lazy/ lacking time to walk days to a hut and go frrom there i'd rather drive in and set up a camp or use the truck as a camp which is more usual, cheers

I have been hunting and wandering our forests for several days now!! Ask Wopass..... There is no bigger pest in our forest than the "cutesy wootsey widdle furry animals" The damage they do is enormous. Whole tracts of the Urueras were completely defoliated at one stage.
When I lived in Huntly, a team of 6 of us used to go out every fri night, to th eone area and kill off approx 600 possums. All from grass lands. they spread TB, and 8 possums will eat as much grass and clover as one sheep.

Ohhhh By the way, Handbrake, is it a kindness to catch a fish by luring it to take a sharp hook in it's mouht, (must hurt!!) and then drag it around until it's exhausted, then lift it up out of it's natural environment and watch it wriggle in panic and presumingly, fear while it dies?

When we take (kill) a deer, it very rarely even knows that it is being hunted, a quick clean slug into the head or neck and death is swift and I hope, painless.

i do my fare bit to slow the growth of out furry friends.

last thursday night a saw a wild cat and stoat, to fast for me though, gona have to go back and try again to get them.

Don't worry Moriarty. You are right. I know nothing! I hope that you did not miss my point though (it seems you may have with your reply). I only wanted it known that I hate it when animals are killed only for fun, with no other purpose like to use the meat, or save the environment. I would probably kill a possum too as I know what they do and know the damage they cause.

As I said in all my posts, I don't have a problem with hunting, I don't have a problem with killing. I just hope that everyone is like you guys on this forum and use the meat (even if it is to feed the dogs!), rather than just kill and discard.

Yup, fishing is pretty inhumane. I feel it everytime I go. You should see me trying to get the hooks out without hurting the fish!! My sister in law was giving me absolute shit, but I just try and minimise the stress. They are always either thrown back (carefully and properly) or taken home and eaten.

I think I have just had some bad experiences when I have found little baby goats running around in the bush, then coming across their Mum lying dead about 20m away. Shot, left, and the babies left to die. It made me sick.

Normal hunting, done properly and humanely does not faze me, and I think that it does the environment a service to get rid of certain pests like possums and rabbits. I was only taking the piss when I referred to the cutsey wootsey furry widdle animals! Those of you that were at Rallywoods trip will know that I am really not that person!!

You're right, Handbrake, I did miss THAT point!! Please accept my apologies.

Now, I am guilty of killing everything that moved at one point, but age DID bring common sense and a modicum of wisdom. I now only kill what I need, standfast possums and goats, the other form of vermin, and i kill THEM evry chance.

OHHH BTY as a cat person, I also bomb them and stoats ,weasels, even if it means possibly missing out on a deer. Our hunting group have always had THAT philosophy.

Tell you one more thing, too. I bet MOST of us would rather let an animal live on, if we cant get a clean kill-shot first up.

To show you, and others, that it is not all kill kill kill, This wee flower is growing in the middle of the track down to Back Ridge hut, NOBODY stood on it!!! they are extremely longlived, these montane orchids, and flower for over a year, it is about the size of a modern 10c piece.


Hebe flowers, the most prolific north Island mountain shrub. Grows EVERYWHERE!!!



Next, Montain Buttercup, NI variety.



This crittur was very unhappy out in the open, so Wopass stuck his great smelly hoof over him to provide him with cover shelter and enuff security for me to take his Pornograph, he's about 65mm long

the best part about hunting for me is not shootin, (although i love it) its just getting out there, hearing all the bird life and seeing all the great stuff you dont see in town, having peace and quiet and having time to think.

Yeah don't you hate that......... Last winter Heading up a station access road down south on a weekend after the wallabies , came round a corner ,and theres a huge boar standing on the side of the road, mad panic ,3 guys trying to exit swb landcruiser , hook up spotlight , get one rifle , abolt, and ammunition together , result was me watching pig in the spotlight wander further and further towards the bush , chilly bins and half our gear on the track, trying to the ammunition box at the bottom. Result....rifle now sits between the seats and box of ammuniton in the glovebox LOL... its always the easy ones that get away
