well i've been given the green light
from the treasury department i mean missus to actually start saving to get myself a 4x4 so my question is how much would be a good budget to save for and what should i consider as a 1st toy.

ataboy off to a good start, this can be expensive hobby,you can get a good cruiser or safari for around $5000, or a less costly gig is a suzuki vitara , smaller tyres, smaller engine ect

wondered how long it would take for the cruiser brigade to turn up....lol it will take a while to save the cash tho, will end up selling my car to help fund it at a later stage as well.niblik wrote:

uggh, id say buy some basic and easy to fix, thats cheap as a first 4wd.
I bought a landrover with a holden 186. Was cool fun. $450 and went well. Only thing id reccomend doing is putting a LWB salisbury rear in. Means you wont break stuff. The next thing after that is tyres ($700 second hand) and then maybe injection for the motor (I have a kit forsale, the only thing missing is the fuel pump). Then you will have a kickass rig for learning to drive well offroad. Not many people realise how hard it is to drive one of these things well.
I liked my landrover too much to sell and get something bigger, so I started my toyota diff conversion on cart springs.......... You wont need to do that with a salisbury rear. Now, I keep wishing that I had just put the salisbury rear in.
So for about $1500, you could have a rig that goes well offroad, that you dont mind bashing up, and is cool. If you need more information, PM me, since you are in welly, I can help you out with the mods as they are reasonably easy to do once you know what you are doing.
P.s, the injected 202 in mine sounded cool, revved really well, and went further than Mikes surf with twin lockers (he has a dent in his rear bumper to show for that).

turoa just told everyone that you should buy a cruiser. you don't have to worry about breaking anything then. he did a good job of telling you to keep away from lorrys

cruiser - cheapish for older models but heavy and can suffer from rust, strong as an ox and go forever.
surf - cheap and lightish, medium long wheelbase with 'family carryin' possibilities..
safari - coiled, bit more costly but comfy, heavy but strong too.
suzuki - cheap and light, go most anywhere..
ladas - cheap and very good 'bang for buck'..

search the net too.. you can find info to support any arguement.. so it really comes down to personnal peference..

Yea, 40 series cruisers ar egood for leaning too, but you will struggle to find a good one with little rust and road legale for under $2000. And they are hard to panelbeat. I really like the ol 40's but I think a land rover or a suzuki will be better suited to somone new to 4wheelings needs

funny cruisers seem to come up a lot....lol there's a 40 series just over the cul de sac from me with a V8 in it (can tell from the mighty roar as it leaves) plus one of the tutors at weltec has a pair, one chev powered ( his road legal rig) and the other ford powered which is his comp truck tho he hasn't competed for few years. and as for mods i'm training to be a fab/welder so would be able to do a lot myself but help never hurts...lol

sound like you need a 40. with all that help over the road you will never go wrong.

A good option is to buy something cheap that you can learn in and not worry about killing, and then upgrade to something better later, Ride in a few different types (see if you can take them for a little spin).
Really depends on what you need..ie do you need it to double as a family car as well?, you may want to aim for a "shiny" tough vehicle and then look at building up a comp truck later (good practice for those welding skills).
Plently of cheap vitara's around, look at a 70 series cruiser (or a prado
), dare I mention Pajero.....
these are common and seem cheap...., Safari's are good and you can pick up a cheap on from $5000 onwards. bear in mind like anything you are going to need to modify it to get better offroad. Look around for a cheap Lada....plenty around....Cloggy knows lots about them.
