wondered how long it would take for the cruiser brigade to turn up....lol it will take a while to save the cash tho, will end up selling my car to help fund it at a later stage as well.
what are the various pros and cons for each vehicle and be honest now i've got a lot of time to make up my mind....

uggh, id say buy some basic and easy to fix, thats cheap as a first 4wd.

I bought a landrover with a holden 186. Was cool fun. $450 and went well. Only thing id reccomend doing is putting a LWB salisbury rear in. Means you wont break stuff. The next thing after that is tyres ($700 second hand) and then maybe injection for the motor (I have a kit forsale, the only thing missing is the fuel pump). Then you will have a kickass rig for learning to drive well offroad. Not many people realise how hard it is to drive one of these things well.

I liked my landrover too much to sell and get something bigger, so I started my toyota diff conversion on cart springs.......... You wont need to do that with a salisbury rear. Now, I keep wishing that I had just put the salisbury rear in.

So for about $1500, you could have a rig that goes well offroad, that you dont mind bashing up, and is cool. If you need more information, PM me, since you are in welly, I can help you out with the mods as they are reasonably easy to do once you know what you are doing.

P.s, the injected 202 in mine sounded cool, revved really well, and went further than Mikes surf with twin lockers (he has a dent in his rear bumper to show for that).

the only thing I was unhappy with was the rear axle. I SHOULD have just salisbury'ed it. But im a retard

ok.... 2 cent rambles .........

cruiser - cheapish for older models but heavy and can suffer from rust, strong as an ox and go forever.

surf - cheap and lightish, medium long wheelbase with 'family carryin' possibilities..

safari - coiled, bit more costly but comfy, heavy but strong too.

suzuki - cheap and light, go most anywhere..

ladas - cheap and very good 'bang for buck'..

heaps more info to find in previous threads..

search the net too.. you can find info to support any arguement.. so it really comes down to personnal peference..

happy shoppin!!!!!!! Image

Yea, 40 series cruisers ar egood for leaning too, but you will struggle to find a good one with little rust and road legale for under $2000. And they are hard to panelbeat. I really like the ol 40's but I think a land rover or a suzuki will be better suited to somone new to 4wheelings needs

funny cruisers seem to come up a lot....lol there's a 40 series just over the cul de sac from me with a V8 in it (can tell from the mighty roar as it leaves) plus one of the tutors at weltec has a pair, one chev powered ( his road legal rig) and the other ford powered which is his comp truck tho he hasn't competed for few years. and as for mods i'm training to be a fab/welder so would be able to do a lot myself but help never hurts...lol

A good option is to buy something cheap that you can learn in and not worry about killing, and then upgrade to something better later, Ride in a few different types (see if you can take them for a little spin).

Really depends on what you need..ie do you need it to double as a family car as well?, you may want to aim for a "shiny" tough vehicle and then look at building up a comp truck later (good practice for those welding skills).

Plently of cheap vitara's around, look at a 70 series cruiser (or a prado  ), dare I mention Pajero..... these are common and seem cheap...., Safari's are good and you can pick up a cheap on from $5000 onwards. bear in mind like anything you are going to need to modify it to get better offroad. Look around for a cheap Lada....plenty around....Cloggy knows lots about them.

Think about if you want a Diesel or a Petrol....Sure A V8 is nice but can get expensive if you need it as a daily drive as well. Look at how easy it is to modify as well....look at what tyres you can put on it and what tyres you want later, consider things like difflocks and LSD's ....how easy are these to get and fit.

Will your new truck have airbags...if so then you are limited by bullbar choice...get something without them and then you can make your own.

my theory is buy something tha is built poperly to go off road from the start

unfortunately Mercedes G wagens don´t come on the market very often and they are usually $10,000+ for something that could be 20+ years old

not regretting my purchase at all though will be gitting my spring perches this week and hopefully have it on the road soon

If you know you are keen to do some serious stuff and want to start right into it, I say get something already as modded as possible (always cheaper than doing the mods yourself) - Something like a 40 or 70 series Cruiser or Prado, maybe Safari etc but you most likely won't really know what mods you will really want for your type of running.

If you are not so sure what type of truck you want or how much you are really going to do 4x4ing you are most likely best to go with a mid range type machine like surf, terrano, mu, suzuki etc then you have the option of modding that a bit later or selling and getting a better truck once you have some direction.

I started off with a $1000 surf that had never been offroad and learnt lots with that and had some fun and introduced it to knocked off mirrors, dented sills, bashed bash-plates and bent and removed bumpers. It had the potential (good body/low Ks) for lots of mods but I decided to sell it (got $1600) and bought myself a cruiser with nearly all the mods I found I wanted (so far).

You can get a good pre-modded truck for $5000-$7000, but if you shop round and push a bit you'll get cheaper.
