hey guys im sure this is a basic question for many but a bit of help would be good, have a friend building up a cheap hilux, he has a newer 2.4 turbo with a blown head and he has an old 2.4 with a shagged bottom end, since these are both similar and L series engines is there any reason we can't build one out of the two by taking the bottom end of the 2.4t?

Not sure myself but don't see any reason why it should'nt work. I'm pretty sure they are exactly the same engines, one with a turbo, one without. Someone on here should know for sure.

Late 2L's [tin top] have completely different head design to early 2L [alloy top], bottom end similar though

oh ok cheers, think we'll have a go at combining the new head with the old bottom end, as usual get a big rangi with it

but get the job done

FYI,
A 2L head is an adjustable tappet type head with adjustable rocker arms.
A 2LT and 3L head are both shim tappet adjustment bucket style heads.

it seems the two engines we have are a 2l-t (85/86) with a stuffed bottom end, and a 2l-te (89/90) with a stuffed head, its looking like we can put the older head on the newer block, we'll hopefully anyway
