Top of the South Winch Challenge

The Marlborough boys have decided to host a winch challenge event along similar lines to the 4WD Upgrades event at Tai Tapu last month. It'll be held on 6 Oct on a private property at Mt Riley - about 20km from Blenheim, off SH6 to Nelson. Because we haven't done it before, we're limiting entries to a total of 20 trucks, in two classes - Big boys max 36in tyres, and Club Class max 33in tyres. Also - it is NOT open to the public for spectators, but competitors support crew are welcome - but there will be no special facilities or marshals for spectators.
Entry fee is $150, which includes 2 meals at the prize-giving.
Post here or PM me with any questions

Is the 36" tyre limit what they measure or what they say on the side wall?
Any other rules we need to be aware of?
Roll cage, winch rope etc

We'll be reasonable about it - but the 36in limit is really to allow for the likes of the slightly oversize 35in Simexes...
Rules will be based on those at Tai Tapu - roll cages not required, helmets will be compulsory, usual winch rules regarding cable dampeners.
We have 12-15 loop circuits, most will have a DNF time limit of 15 min - a couple will be 30min, some will be driveable without winching. There will be some compulsory winch sections to reduce the chances of rollovers, and to prevent the big boys ripping the tracks up too much. We'll be trying to make line selection and teamwork more important than speed and horsepower, and avoiding extreme cambers and risk of rolling. There will still be potential for panel damage if you get it wrong...

Sounds like it will be a good event.
I run 37 x 13.5 Claws, measure in at 36.4 inches so fit within the other winch comp specs. Would these be allowed?

rules for trucks? wof/reg? since its on private land it shouldnt matter or is it along the tai tap one where they need wof/reg for insurance reasons 3rd party, although saying that most insurance is invalid for competition. otherwise ill fit a winch to my LR and bring it up.

Your just not allowed to enter doddzee. Dont let him enter PPLEEASSEEEE he will win the dam thing guaranteeeed.
36.4 inches is .4 inches to big. Youll have to do some 4 wheel burnouts or run them real low pressure through scrutineering

Dunno about that mike. Im sure there are a fair few trucks out there more capable than mine.
Havent been down south for about 5 years so its about time i headed back over, winch challenge would be a good excuse too.

37's on the sidewall, and 36.4 measured is stretching things a bit too far. Like I said - the 36in limit is to allow for 35's which are a bit over. WOF and Reg and 3rd party insurance is required to meet our liability insurance requirements.

Thought that may be the case. If i can find a set of 35's to borrow or steal i may make the trip down for it.
Do you have an entry form you can send me?

Doe's this mean that each truck has to have DOT stamped on there tyres, to meet the WOF standards.

We're not running a WOF test - just checking the label on the windscreen....

Hmmm this could be the event to get me motivated to finally finish or get the LR certed for the road. I will look into it tomorrow and decide finally then. The loburn trial got the old girl ready for general 4wd use and this will get it drivable on the road
When do the entries have to be in by? If I remember rightly I heard the tai tap was down on numbers or am i mistaken? This shouldnt happen with it being so close to wellington.

Entries will close off a month before the event - 6 Sep, or when we have our limit of 20 entries (paid-up). Our planning has got the tracks sorted (cos that's fun), but the admin is lagging a little - better get the entry forms sorted pretty soon...
Register your interest by email to
mark.shepherd@xtra.co.nz
Then we'll get the entry forms, rules, etc to you as soon as we've got the details finalised.

One day event - scrutineering on the evening Fri 5 Oct at Delta 4WD in Grove Rd (next to Firestone), the competition on Sat 6th at the end of Mt Riley Road (do a search on wises.co.nz or google earth), and the prizegiving at the Woodbourne pub in Renwick on Sat night. There are plenty of tracks so it will be a full-on day. Drive home on Sun with time for repairs if needed....

When are the rules available, depending on what they say, I might enter Worthog just to keep dodzee honest -then to find a winch bitch
Will we need a ground anchor ?
What about accommodiation

Got the rules finalised now - PM me your email address & I'll send them through. Ground anchor is required. Tyre size will be measured horizontally at 30psi - max measured diameter is 36.5in. Same rules as used at the 4WD Upgrades event at Tai Tapu - only changes are to allow steel winch cables, and spark arrestors must be fitted. We'll be using the same circuits (but going down the winch banks) this weekend for the annual Club Hard Yakka day. VERY wet, so should be heaps of fun!
