I want to fit a 16in thermo fan to my Hilux but it will require modification of the front panel where the bonnet catch mounts.
Without a lot of fab it will mean losing the catch assembly and verticle strut.
Are bonnet pins on there own acceptable for WOF standards?
Anyone have any thoughts?
Cheers
Matt.
Replacing bonnet catch with pins
Thanks Matt.
I have a 1UZ in it and its currently running a commodore rad and 2x10in fans. I plan to go to a cruiser rad and a single 16in.
The test fit I did yesterday shows that I will need to cut out the bottom brace that runs horizontally and also remove the latch assembly.
If I don't remove the latch then the fan needs to sit too far down and I would prefer it to be further up. If I keep the latch then I also need to fab up a new vertical brace to support the top latch mount area.
With the 1UZ the radiator has to be as far back as possible for clearance.
Cheers

Last time I ran pins the requirements were you had to have 2 pins (I had 4 and the whole bonet lifted off it was a quarter mile car after all) and the bonnet cannot be sprung up (bonnet held down on bump stops).
Also the pin's had to be wired to the bonnet, and the area pinned was strengthened.
Perhaps a certifier will be better suited to ask this was what I had to do to run on the road. Oh and the boot was pinned too (less weight)

Is that a twin fan setup Bill? That CFM figure is quite high.
I have done quite a bit of research on fans and 2400cfm is about the most you will get from any fan, assuming you believe the manufacturers figures.
A lot of the 10's and 12's are about 1400cfm with the top quality units around 1600CFM.
If you work out the area coverage you are better off with a single large fan than you are with two small ones, assuming you can fit a large single that is.
