This was the recent poll by the nz4wd list on steering wheel placement. I think the results are important for beginners to see what is done and what is not.

POLL QUESTION: I normally use the following hands-on
steering-wheel driving style

CHOICES AND RESULTS
    - Thumbs out, 14 votes, 30.43%
    - Thumbs in, 0 votes, 0.00%
    - Hand over hand, 7 votes, 15.22%
    - Hand Shuffle, 3 votes, 6.52%
    - In sand/mud one hand top-centre, 4 votes, 8.70%
    - Top -centre rotate wheel with palm, 5 votes, 10.87%
    - Use steering wheel rotating knob, 2 votes, 4.35%
    - Is steering wheel knob safe - yes, 3 votes, 6.52%
    - Is steering wheel knob safe - no, 8 votes, 17.39%

Had a steering wheel on a tractor bite once, got lucky though it didn't break my thumb, did dislocate it though.
Oh yeh, it also threw my elbow through the side window, all this happened in about .5 of a second.
Keep your thumbs outside the wheel ALWAYS. :wink:
