Hi guys,thought,as ive just joined-better tell ya bout my truck!sorry no pics yet,need to figure out how to attatch them!
96 sr5 nz lux(last of the beam axles)4 inch suspension lift,ranchos,33x12.5 BFG m/t and an IHI turbo(8 lb boost)
she goes ok, but has developed a nasty vibration under load,most noticeable in 3rd and 4th-sounds and feels like a grinding noise! Hoping someone might have some ideas on noise?

Check the centre bearing on your driveshaft ,if it is a two section shaft. It has a rubber mounting surrounding it that can fail causing the driveshaft to do strange things.

first time that happened to mine main symptom was turning caused major bad vibrations and shuddering, mainly at very low speed and that was the centre bearing

When you check that centre bearing also look and see what the drive shaft universals are like, one of the universals was going and the driveshaft was pulled apart and rotated 90 deg and put back together (when I bought it).

Cheers for the feed back guys,had a new centre bearing put in,uj's seem fine and are in 'phase' apparently!a lot of vibration has gone after new centre bearing but noise is still the same!bugger!!!
Toyota told me it was the gearbox,so put in a reconditioned one from Lineside-noise still there,then they said T/case-i put a second hand one in,noise still there-not happy with the Toyota 'experts'
Buggered if i know!If i gently ease the power on its not too bad,worse if i give it the jandal!
hope its not the engine,cos of the turbo!

feels like somethings out of ballance,
might have to wait for something to break!!!

check all your engine and gearbox mounts. the rubber can perish and that will cause some funny viabrations. also check wheel bearings to. can you hear anything when in 5th?

wheel bearings or diff head maybe??

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but your Hilux is irreversably broken... you'll have to give it to me and I'll dispose of it for you...

Alternatively, space down the centre bearing... with 4" lift springs on the 2-piece shaft it will still cause problems under load... the angle from the centre bearing to the rear diff will be too steep. Either single-piece shaft it or space the centre bearing down a little... should help. Unfortunately you need the same angles at the front and rear UJ's and the more you lift it the harder to get that right it becomes... It's going to be some trial and error for you to eliminate it I think...

I can't believe you were told to replace the gearbox and t/c...

Nice try Steve,I have considered disposing of it!Was looking at replacing it with a cruiser or safari,but I like the old lux-cheap to run,maybee not that cheap to maintain if you take advice from Toyota tho!
I will try spacing the centre bearing-makes sense,check the wheel bearings and engine/gearbox mounts(the rubber looks a bit stretched,but its only done 185k's)and let ya know.
Will have to get on to sorting out some pic's soon too!

Cant find the receipt,but i think about $100 for a non Toyota one from 4wd upgrades,made a big difference re vibration!
