Off Road Starlet

Post by MAHINDRACJ4A »

Haha Hey Guys

Iv Got A Toyota Starlet Sitting In The Shed With A Bit Of Frontal Damage:
Image

Its Going To Get A Roof Chop Next Week To Turn It Into A Ute

So It Looks Like This : ( Photoshopped with lift and back cut off)
Image
Not Quiet Sure About The Lift Yet ( Wondering how to do it)

And This Is The Ultimate Plan ( Maybe With A Higher Lift)
Image
Haha

Well Im Not 100% Sure On The Last Photo but for the main time will just get the roof cut and used on the farm for a bit, then maybe have it looking like the last photo

i think this will get as far as being a paddock basher?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! it still seems reasonable tidy(apart from front) so why dont you part out the good bits for cash to put towards your truck
toymota thats stock standard.

problem is not many people require parts, iv had parts listed on trade me for a while now, and the only thing some one wanted was the parcel tray lol

so its just bit off a fun cheap project, maybe if i can find a 4x4 running gear for real cheap i'l put that under it

thinking out loud here. ive never done anything even remotly like what you plan.

with the suspension set up those have in the rear it would be relitivly easy to put a diff under the rear. they already have a soild axle with trailing arms and panhard rod. id find some suzuki diffs, but they are geting expensive now. the front will be a bit of a major i think...
maybe make up some cusom wishbones and make a kinda solid rear with indepandant front set up? then you still have to find a motor and 4wd box.
subaru leone setup maybe? some have hi/low transfurs in them.... but you would still need custom driveshafts and posibly cvs etc....

find a rooling zuk chassis and bolt it down onto that i think if funds are limited... the starlet body chassis configuration wont stand up to much abuse if you have running gear straight on it.

the more i think, the more $$ tend to be neded, and before you chop off the roof make sure you strengthen the chassis.... otherwise the body may sag...

will be cool if you sort it tho!

Yeah thanks for the help bud

well im not going to pour lots of money into this so yeah, for now the roof chop will do, then later on if i can find a real cheap or free 4x4 with fully rusted out body i might buy that and put starlet on into the chassis, that that will be quite a while though, because the mahindra jeep seems to want quite a lot of money with my plans LoL

but will keep you posted on this

Hye guys just found out that the starlet body wont come off the chassis as it is a "unibody" so the chassis is built in to the body,

now any one have any ideas of how to make this work ( to put on to the sj410 ) ?

Yeah I believe it was only intended for an offroad hack, just a cab to provide controls. Plenty of fun tho!

No to be an arrogant bugger, but seriously man, think about what you are trying to do.

You've got a starlet. Its of monocoque/unibody construction, and a SJ410 chassis.

So you have to pull all the running gear out of the starlet and plonk whats left ontop of the SJ410 chassis.

You are going to have to make up your own body mounts, hope that the engine bay is big enough to fit over the engine (the starlet will be front wheel drive with a transverse mounted engine and trans, the suk engine is mounted longditudinally so will be a tight fit), adapt all the controls from the starlet (clutch, brakes, accellerator, electrics) to opperate the sj410 gear.

Also, being a front wheel drive car, there is no tranmission tunnel, so your going to have to figure out how are you going to fit the body over the gearbox and transfer case.

Another thing to is that the SJ410 and the startlet possibly have similar dimensions, so the size of the wheel arches will be an issue. I can tell you now, some seriouse trimming will be required if its going to be possible to fit some 31X10'5 muds under it.

My guess is that you will have to mount the body high up so it clears the the transfer case and gear box, or cut holes in the floor and fire wall so you can mount the body dirctly to the chassis, and then fab up panels to cover the holes over the intruding tranmission parts.

The reason why the starlet worked on the surf chassis is that the body was so small compared to the chassis, the the wheel arches weren't an issue as the body sat well inside the wheel track. Also in the surf chassis, the transmission is mounted pretty low down, so they didn't need to cut the floor to fit around it, just spaced the body up a small amount.

In my opinion, no matter what you do, its still gonna look like a body plonked ontop of a 4x4 chassis like the one dixie posted

Yep, I agree with DB.

If you wanna make it look like that vitara, then put hilux gear under your 413 and a commodore V6 in it, and go thrash the pants off it.

It will be more practical and go alot more places and look way cooler.

Any thing is possible

But these are big projects - if you have another main project work on one at a time. If you want a rough off roader, sell the starlet on TM for what ever you can get for it and then just search for the cheapest 4x4/SUV you can find and buy that, heaps less work and prob lots cheaper.

If you really want a Starlet offroader, consider it a project and dedicate to doing it.

If you just want to play round with panel cutting, go for it and be prepared to call the scrap metal guy when it looks like its gonna start costing

Any option have fun and learn something :)

if you dont want to go to far with it you cant go past conseriding putting the running gear out of a AE95 in to it 1600cc A series motoer can be turboed & bought up to 1800cc with the $$$ tho, gear box & diff`s to bolt stright in just have to shorten the drive shaft
