G'day. First dumbass question as a newbie.... I did a bit of a site search but could not find the answer.

I have a LWB Pajero and drive mainly on the road. Will tyre chains give me any advantage off-road? I do not wish to do much mud busting, but would like to be able to traverse the occasional bit of greasy stuff without buying new rubber.

what sort of rubber do u have on it at the moment
do u have lsd or diff loker or open diffs
chains will give u traction but better to get all terrain tyers

Chains will do what you want, but they also can cause damage to the tire.

Yes I have them and use them when I have to and they work really well, you may be supprised how far you can go on road tires and just get all terains next time you need tires.

how greasy is greasy? are you getting stuck at the moment? and it is not easy to fit chains in the greasy stuff if you are stuck perhaps a turfor hand winch may be more suited to your particular requirements if you do get stuck.

I have done a bit of off-road over the years, but not in the same league as stuff seen on this site.
I have got Michelin Alpines on the front which are new and seem to have quite a good tread pattern. Kumho's on the back are OK but will need replacing sooner or later.

I don"t have locking diffs , but have a winch and am setting up some basic recovery gear to go with it. Already have a compressor for inflation.

I am not currrently getting stuck , and am really just getting set up as a precaution until I figure out mine and the vehicles limits. I just don't want to find them out the hard way.

It sounds like the chains might be a good thing to have for back-up, but not regular use.
