South Island New Year trip/Campout for the North Islanders??

Post by Jerry »

Is there any interest in doing a little trek down South to visit our Hilbilly cousins in the new year sometime?, if so any idea's on possible dates and where to do a trip and things to do?.

If we do organise a trip don't forget to load up the banjo's and pitchforks...and they drink that funny speights beers too...

You aren't a southerner are you? ...how many toes do you have? and how many strings are there on a Banjo? (and how the #### did you get past customs)

How many people are interested in a trip like this? and do you want a nice not really damagy trip (considering we have to drive home) and loads of scenery to keep the missus and kids happy?

Thoughts?

I certainly will be keeping an eye on how this develops too. Yes, I am a mainlander and any chance to go home.....

January this year a group of us did some back country roads, not really 4WD. We went over the Molesworth Station Road, spent a day in Hanmer Springs exploring some of the foresty roads, then back over the Rainbow before heading down South sticking to the main roads. One excursion over the Nevis Road, and up Skippers to finish off the trip.

Would love to explore some of the more back country roads, mixed in with some camping, had been thinking of raising the idea myself. Would be great to do some of the back country sheep station tracks without the high costs of the commercial tag-along.

Cheers
Ian

One 4WD and a driver will set you back $160 each way using the cheapest fare.

Keep an eye on Queenstown's Shotover club website nearer the time for upcoming trips, you're welcome to tag along on one of our trips as long as you have the basic gear.

http://www.shotover4wdclub.co.nz

and check under the 'club stuff' link for upcoming trips.

 Surely somebody else who doesn't have a truck full of passengers can A-frame the Zuk for you and carry you between tracks. I am sure you can come to some sort of monetary agreement for fuel.

Have you guys thought about putting them as cargo on a train to CHCH and fly down to meet them. Could work out cheaper.

Could rail all the way down here, have someone store them till you want them. Suppose it takes half the fun away not driving down...

maybe rail down the ones that need towing?, trailering down Ryan's Zuk would be easier than A framing it....
