Ground Anchors

Newbie questions #2...
I am looking for a ground anchor and as I have some access to engineering gear , will probably end up fabricating it.
Any suggestions as to a good all-rounder? Would a Danforth folding anchor be any use in mud and sand ?
I have seen a design that looks a hell of lot like 3 warratahs hammered in and roped together......any good?
I have seen quite a few references to recoil blankets elsewhere and am thinking of combining this with a heavy winch cover, which I will make.
What sort of mass is needed for these, and is something the size of a winch cover going to be big enough or is it a dumb idea?
If anyone has any reccomendations or useful links , please let me know.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers , Dave.

HI, what you saw as 3 waratahs was most likely 3 warratah's! They are relatively slow to set up and pull down but they will almost always hold and can be used by one person.
If I am away on my own that is what I take, remember the fancy ground anchor spade type basically take two people to operate.
You can fabricate one but getting the angles right might take a few goes & they do work very well in sand.
The recoil blankets such as an Orange ARB one weights in at just over 1kg I think, they are more substantial that they look, I think winch challenge rules say 1kg minimum.

Do you plan on having one or two people? most anchors require two people or a remote control for the winch but if you want ideas on sunday extreme 4x4 they have a couple of designs and seem to work quite well.
This is the style they tend to use most but in gravel you may need to dig it in to start it.

I will often be alone , but have a remote for the winch.
That anchor looks like the business and it might be a lot less dicking around to just buy one.
But meanwhile I have warratahs lying around and will do a set-up with them.
Off work today as there is a real pisser of a storm happening here in the winterless North.......I wonder if the roof's gonna stay put.
Cheers, Dave.

OK with the warratahs you need a plate at the bottom that they all go through and this plate is what you pull off.
you also need to hammer them in on angles (not pointing towards the car) one to the back the last one and the side ones one to the right and one to the left of where you are pulling from.
it takes a while to setup but when you are stuck and on your own you can't beat them. also if you are in sand most anchors don't work it would be better to bury the spare tire (upright) and pull off that
or never get stuck, but you would need something realy special for that last one a hellicopter maybe?

No problem! I have done what any tough, resourceful Kiwi bloke would do and broken out the emergency Canadian Club, and will worry bout it when the hurricane stops.
At least I can play on the internet now....... powers on again and I never did get one of those gas-powered jobs.
Hi Coxsy , that looks like a beauty.
Will catch up Dr PC and check it out.
Cheers Dave.

Could I be cheeky and ask that you post the measurements / angles in here

.. nothing beats tried and proven.
I have a mate who works for a steel engineer and he owes me a favour

What a pack of bastards! All these guys were tying to do is help a newbie, and next they get requests for measurements and such.
I am beginning to really enjoy this forum.

Some interesting info here

That's excellent Swaney! Should be able to make something from all that info. I'm sure stolen plans are better anyway.
Cheers, Dave.

if you're not interested in making one. there is a guy in taupo who spent a lot of time and effort and lots of prototypes getting the right measurements and angles. he is still making them to order. if you're interested then ring Mainland Engineering in Taupo.

This one was spotted in the back of a vehicle one day when I was out driving. Don't know any more about it sorry.
