the single gear pto suits split transfers and the double geared pto suits one piece cases ie pre 1980.you need single gear one skid .i bought one with a 5 speed recently but some arsehole removed the main gear before i got it so its useless unless i run out of bottles to throw at the neighbours cats

Phil put the 82-84 gearbox and case in my truck(I think). So I presume that its a split case :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

DUN DAHHHH.... wrong.

here you go,(in a bad french accent) listen very closly... i will say this only once...

early solid cast cases had twin gear pto's then the early split cases came out and they only had single gear pto's,then the early 60 series came out with split case transfer and some of them have twin gear pto's ( i have one on my truck now  ) then mostly after that there was a mixed bag of single and twin gear pto's...... right thru the 60 series and the 70 series, most 70 series had single gear b ut some had twin.

there ya go. if your only going to be winching once in a while and not in a hurry, single gear is fine. if your gonna be using it a bit and need line out speed, twin gear is the jizm.

Hey Wopass
scuze my ignorance, are you saying the twin gear ones have a hi & lo speed set-up? Keen to learn as I need to get one for my Prado sometime soon. Like the hi speed option if that is what it is.
Cheers in advance

no.

twin gear pto's have 3 positions on the pto lever, they have line in neutral and line out which enables you to line out as fast as your winch bitch can run (in any gear thru the gearbox)without having to freespool the drum.

single gear pto's only have 2 positions,in gear and neutral... ie you can line in,in any gear but only line out in reverse(very slow) or you have to disengage the dog gear on the drum and free spool to line out. which takes a bit of time and most times you end up with a birds nest on your drum.

does that answer you Q ?
