OK. I know this is listed under planning a trip, but believe me this is one trip I don't think I could plan on my own.

I was talking to a mate the other day about trips and where we could go etc etc....

Then we both hit on this really outrageous idea of a trip from the top of the north to the bottom of the south. Then as the beers started flowing the ideas started coming on how it could be done.

What if it started with a club from the far north organising a trip down to the outskirts of Whangarei and then the Whangarei club run a trip to Auckland and so on and so on, until we end up at the bottom of the south island.
This has been done with cars in the past, but as far as I know its never been done off road.

Participants could join in and leave when they please. So if you lived in Auckland you could go as far as say Taupo over 2-3 days and then go home, or if you were really committed you could go the whole way from top to bottom.

What thoughts does everyone have on this radical idea and do you think it could be pulled off. :?:

what if the goal was to travel from the top to the bottom with under 5% on sealed roads, trying to tie together farm tracks, beaches etc. Could be a real adventure.

Great idea

that was the plan.

the other thing is that it would be a huge trip which would take lots of time to do.
So you could do it year by year. Far north to Taupo one year. Taupo to welly the next year and so on.

Yeah it would make for an awesome doco series, might even change some peoples perceptions of 4wders and show them some of the places we see and people you meet

Do it endurance rally type style. Have a preprepared track and set basic requirement for vehicles. Get each vehicle numbered and if they can get sponsors. A team of two-four people per vehicle and set them off and have checkpoints along the route that they must check in and out at. Could do one big trek or just make it that they must complete it section by section over a given period start at any checkpoint and out at any and then get that section ticked off. Check points could be a supporting business in a town etc.

I had thought of a similar endurance thing for classic cars the length of the South Island staying on back roads the whole way.

My mate might be interested in doco'ing it....he did the 20th annivisery rust nuts thingy not so long ago....
