right well i have a wof coming up and the handbrake is shot...read wont do a thing, not ever slow it down...


i have found the adjuster up by the lever but it seems right in...where else can you adjust it otherwise what am i faced with

It seems starnge that the adjuster is right in??? Is there anthor one inside the cab in the handbrake area???? Discs or drums in the back

yep the adjuster on the side of the handle in the cab.

its disc...should there be an adjuster at the wheels? where and what do i look for.

There will be anthor adjuster underneath the cab!!!!! its usually about a foot back from where the cable goes through the body but I have seen a couple of vehicles that have it closer to the rear axle good luck

Look for a hole in the face of the disc, between the wheel studs.
turn the disc untill that hole is at 6.00 oclock, use a flat ended screw driver, insert in to hole, wiggle around till you find the ratchet wheel, and move the handle of the screwdriver in a downward motion to expand the brake shoes.

It belive he said he had disc in the rear

At the moment nothing getting done till January then taking 2 weeks off to work on the truck and the list is getting longer and longer

He did say they were disc, and this is how to ajust the hand brake on the rear .

adjusters on the cables are there for adjusting stretch and slack in the cables only,the handbrake adjusters are inside the rear disc assembly usually at the bottom behind a rubber grommet,you have to take the wheels off to see im

What Kevin forgot to tell you is that these are like a lot of other disc-brake-rear vehicles and actually have a tiny drum brake assembly for the park brake function inside the disc.

Crawl under and have a good look , you'll see .

You may need to get these shoes re-lined , last time I priced them from toyota they were really expensive

Your best to get them relined at a brake shop, Nelson Brake Services can do them much cheaper than OME Parts.

It would be expensive for Kaney to travel all the way to Nelson to have his brakes done

Yep reckon your up for a new set of shoes. Try Partsmaster or BNT. would still price them up at Miles toyota as you might be surprised at how much there might not be in diference in prce. Let us all know how you get on.

i`d check them first those hand brake shoes hardly ever wear out(unless youve got an auto and ya missus drives it ) make sure you back off the adjustment FIRST before you try and remove the disc otherwise you will end up with a handful of broken spring retainers this style of handbrake is a true "parkbrake" driving along at 30k`s and ripping on the handbrake will turn them inside out,had this argument with the local testing station a few times

I replaced my Hb shoes for the WOF just before the New Year trip where we met up. I had done 60,000km's on them and before me at least 80,0000.
They are probably Ok to just adjust as during that 60k I had re-adjusted the shoes 4 times, ie each warrant.

The comment that the shoes don't wear out is true unless like most of us you 4wd in mud. Then they do wear out but at the rate as shown above.
Yes I had one spring & retainer fall off and wear out. This showed up as I replaced the shoes.

Had to re-adjust them at the shoes again two weeks ago for the next warrant as well only 15k later and I dont use my Handbrake much.

The other thing I do is use a little tube about 10mm long on the adjustment rod below the locknut and plastic knob at the handbrake. This allows more rod to be pulled up tightening the handbrake cable further.
The adjuster knob does end up coming up through the vinal shroud though. Had to take this tube off after I put the new shoes in, but it is back in again 6 months later.

If you need to re-line them go to Safe-R-Brakes down Durham St two blocks south of Moorhouse Ave. That is where they do their re-lining.
I just bought new ones but next time I will get the old ones re-done beforehand!

A little tip: before you remove the shoes, mark which way the adjuster is, a mate of mine couldn't tighten the shoes, we pulled them off and found someone had put the ajuster in the wrong way arround.[/u][/b]

well i did this and it works fine now thanks guys...at wasnt that hard in the end

I have the same problem.... There are small shoes inside the disc...

The main problem is they get muddy....... You need to take them apart and clean then out... Also the cable stretches and you need to place a long hollow rod over the adjustment tread near the hand brake to allow it to pull the shoes up a little more... I have the same problem with my handbrake every 6 months at WOF time.
