What's the minimum for 35's

Post by Jafa »

Hi all,
Can any of you expert Hilux owners tell me what is the minimum I have to do to get a set of 35' tyres under my Hilux? It is a 89 with solid front axle and stock suspension.
Will a 50mm body lift be enough or 75mm? Will they rub on steering or chassis? Do I need wheel spacers? I was thinking that as it needs new tyres soon I might as well get the biggest i can without going crazy. It is on 31's at the moment and has no rubbing or lack of lock issues at all. Or without major work am I farting into teh wind?

Jafa - you will probably need a large sledge hammer and a 50mm lift...

I'm not joking either... you'll need to bash the seam flat against the footwell just inside the guard or it will shred your tyre.

I had cutting and rubbing issues with my truck on 33"s with a 35mm lift, so I expect you will at 50 even.

The trick is to move your axle forward - give me a call if you want details, but you need to either shorten your torque rod, or lengthen it and move the mount forward, lengthen the driveshaft, replace your front springs with good hilux rear ones, fit longer front shackles, modify the steering drag link and possibly insert shims to correct the castor.

Thats all you need to fit 35"s with no other mods, plus you get good front suspension, and better approach angles...

Steve.

PS: IS this why you wanted the drawings for my spacers? :P

lol........ They will rub on your standard pitman arm too from what I've seen. ( Don't know from experience, went high steer/crossover at the same time as 35s)

I pretty sure that the maximum body lift is 50mm to get it certified and your tyres arn't allowed to pertrude the body, but rubber flares are cheap and easy to fit.

Rears bolt straight into the front but (+ what Steve said) your drag link will need to be modified (I think :? )

It sounds like heaps, but it's not that much really. If you had the parts you could have it done in a day with no problems. :D :D

 yer it does look a bit like that dosn't it
I was actually thinking that i might turn up some steel hubs that have the spacer integrated, i.e. no separate spacer, but the track is still wider, Might keep the cert man happier having no spacers at all.

So it looks like hilux rears up front, modified drag link, move axle forward,
modified torque rod,, longer driveshaft, castor shims, maybe crossover and hi steer, and new shackles.
I'll grovel thro my spares and see what i can dig up :P

Thanks for your input Steve and Tom, I can see from your pics in the albums that you guys have got your lux's pretty well sorted

Jafa

P.S. I rang the cert guy here, who is also a member of teh 4wd club I belong to here, and he says that there aint any lift limit as far as he knows  , but hes never seen a lift more than 50mm?! Can anyone say for sure if there is a limit? I have looked all over the LVV website and cant find anything

HA! I'm with Tom... my trucks in the shed, half a new supra motor fitted and wires from asshole to breakfast, no plumbing, no fuel lines, only two bolts holding it to the gearbox... its a shambles

Tom and I are the LAST people you should be calling sorted right now :P

hi Im curious as Im collecting bits ( 8o series, Bundera,) to convert my beast to coil over and the gods are converting back to leaves what goes on? Not that Im copying anyone just puzzled. Present set-up is some rear springs from a ute in the front with Ranchos and axle moved foward. Articulation is good but there was room for improvement until you guys may be on to something different???
