ORE lynch squads help needed!!!
As most of you know, I bought safari diffs to go into my nisco. The seller stated that they were in good condition.....well the back was but the front is very wobbly (needs complete swivel overhaul + wheel bearings) and it leaks oil like a seive. I have tried PMing the guy, several weeks ago, I have gotten his email off mike and its no longer used. Generally im really pissed off. All I want is some money to offset the cost of the rebuild kit which is going to cost just over $400 and thats on the cheap!!! most of you may say so what??? its only $400 just pay it. but to a boy who is still at school without a real income it gets hard. His name is Dave mitchell. He lives somewhere down south his email is dcmitch@paradise.net.nz but is no longer in use. Who can help my locate this guy or even better I just want some money back so i can rebuild the front diff that was sold to me in "good condition"......

$400 is a very cheap rebuild too!!!!!!
So the wheel bearings are toast?? You can just repack them and tighten them up??
Make sure you take a wheel bearing and a king pin bearing to Farrels or Seaco or some other bearing wholesaler that you have down there, they are all standard size bearings and a SHIT load cheaper than genuine!!!!!!!
Good luck with trackin the guy down, but don't rely on it.

30 kph is way to fast for most offroading anyway
. I don't like your chances of getting anything back from this dude even if you do track him down. The diffs have been fitted to a modified vehicle that you admit to using (albeit under 30 kph
). Once this is said it'll be your word against his and unfortunately for you hes the one with the cash. Don't get to stressed about it, if the front diff is as bad as you're saying then you should have picked up on these faults when you first got it. Mark it down to a learning experience and never buy Nissan stuff again.

When I got the diffs they arrived with leaky swivels....i thought yea ok. But I didnt pull the whole diff apart to check that everything was ok becuase when i spoke to him he told me everything was fine and that it was from a low kay vehicle. As soon as the diff swap was complete we attempted to drive it on the road and it was impossible due to the amount of play in the front end. We ended up trailering it most places which is just a huge pain in the ass. Stressted about it? well yea i am kinda because I needa get it certed so that I can get a wof. And if the front diff didnt need a rebuild becuase i bought it in good condition i would be able to get a cert for it and a wof and the best thing of all.....i would be able to do some wheeling in it

James, I gained respect for you when you first started this diff swap and have allready stated this in an earlier post. Don't go spoiling it now.
I think your energy would be put to better use getting the job finished rather than chasing the seller, I don't think you would have a Diff (LEG) to stand on, I know it F's you off but put it down to one off lifes lessons, when buying there is a saying that I will use for my finish line
.
Now to get you and vehicle on track.
Com'on all you old grease monkeys who live in MrO's area give him a few hours and show him how to rebuild a front end, show him how we where taught to re-build before the days of the parts fitters.
As stated earlier bearings have measurment and can be bought from suppliers, Most if not all bearings fitted to the front end are adjustible, If cups are moving in housings there is Loctit; As for swivel hubs leaking , I fill them with good quaility water resistant grease. Replace your front pinion seal.
Front wheel wobble, can be many things, when tyres sit for a period of time they get flat spots that will cause the tyre to be out of balance, or just plane out of balance is one of the main reasons for wheels getting the shakes. When you did the diff swap did you build in some castor
Are your steering arms as parallel to the diff housing as you can get them?.
Ask for HELP
. And keep your Energies in the right direction,
Keep up the good work.
LET THE BUYER BEWARE,
FITZY.

A good diff wouldn't have leaky swivels, you should have got hold of the guy then. If i saw leaky swivels i would have given the rest of it a good check too. As Fitzy said this situation suxs for you, but shit happens to everyone. At least this way you know you'll have a good run out of it with no problems once this is fixed.

Only mods to the front end was castor correction, front brake lines and some bits of U section for the shock to bolt to.
Yes, I made sure castor was built in. everything is as it should be. The thing wasnt driven at all and we knew it had wobbles because I a framed it down the drive and it was wobbling.

It's an unfortunate state of affairs, and I feel for your prediciment there Mr.O.
We have all had similar experiences in the past and mechanical things are the worst to deal in - why do you think Car Sales people have such a bad name in general?
The best idea is to try to do the repairs and forget about getting anything back from the seller, because you probably won't.
Keep a smile on your dial and get it fixed, I'm sure there are some handy people in the Wellington region that can pitch in and give some help to you.
If I was there i would...
Anyway, once you repair it you will know its good for umpteen 1000s more K's - and you will know exactly what you have - which is the best thing.
When I bought my Rangie it was the same, the guy said he had done this and that and the other, but he was just talking a crock of the smelly brown stuff. I had to replace the engine, wheel bearings, do rust in the back end, replace doors, do swivels etc etc etc...cost me a packet! Which I could not easily afford, but at least I know what I have now and know it is good and relaible.
all the best, don't let the bastards beat you, just fix it!! It can't be any harder than what you guys have already done. Keep smiling!
John

I have bought the diff kit and wheel bearings. I would like to say thank you to Rob from Naenae tyre court for getting me the bits and bobs on his work account for cheap. Also Marty (Stinky) who has given me a front housing with good condition knuckles on it (If mine are really totally knackered) And Doddzee said he will lend me his nissan service manual and hes going to press my old wheel bearings out and press my new ones in.

Don,t hold your breath on the rebuild doing the trick either James.
I still haven't got mine behaving, and at 50 kph it has had the shakes bad enough to break the tie rod off at the the tie rod ends. My axle was fully rebuilt with all new gear, (diff bearings pinon bearings, wheel bearings, swivel bearings, all seals new, new rod ends on all rods etc). I have built adjustable control arms so that castor can be altered, (made it slightly better), but the only way it could be towed or driven at all was to seriously toe out the front wheels.
Still don,t know what is causing it, and it has me buggered. So at the mo mine is a trailer queen. If you get your rig sorted and handling, let me know dude.
