viscous fan

How do these work??? on my surf (3L V6 petrol) the viscous fan was stuffed so i pulled it apart and glued the viscous bit together as a temp fix untill i can find a new one or replace it with an electric. however it now seems to be spinning very fast. you can see it move toward the radiator when you rev it up. do viscous fans spin locked at all or do they always have some slip. i dont remember it going this fast before.

yea how much though is what i want to know. i would have thought that if held at a constant speed they would catch up to the same speed as almost fixed?

well i dont know the technical jargon sorry....i just know that you can always stop them with your hand at no matter what speed they are doing??

have read somewhere you can rebuild these filled with a relly thick oil from memory (sorry guys) try a search on 4wdmonthly.com.au I think it is might have to look for a bit have bolted these upsolid in tractors in the past

hmmm interesting. maby ill try not to rev it to hard untill i get a new viscous unit or an elec fan.
any advice?

Easiest way too tell if it's really poked is warm your engine up to running temperature, shut your engine off and watch the fan, if it's working properly it should stop spinning quite quickly, if it's poked it will spin on for quite some time (like about 10 or 15 seconds), if you can't watch the fan wind down just turn the fan by hand when the engine is warmed up and engine is off, it should be quite firm to turn, if it turns freely with little drag pluck it off and bung a new one on soon as, preferably before summer, cold weather will keep it cool for now.

mine gave up so I took it off and stuck three or four bolts right through it. Solved the heating problem but did make it spin fast and made more noise and I reckon used more gas. Didn't cause any problems tho.
My ultimate solution was to sell the truck
I think the buyer was going to fit electric

you can get them tested at hormby radiator service for $25.
beware tho, i had mine tested and he said it was fine...it wasnt, it didnt engage so i got another one off tm for $30, fixed!
Up to you, $25 isnt much to get it tested.

yea its deffinately stuffed had grease coming out of it and spun pritty freely. and now its super glued together. im just scared if they fan might explode from spinning to fast. ill try and sort an elec one or 2nd hand viscous.

you can buy the viscous silicon stuff from toyota its not very expensive
