my ln130 surf squeels when the engine boosts. so frist of all i guessing its the turbo? and secondly i want to know if anyone can tell me - is it cheaper to replace the turbo with a good second hand unit or get mine reconditioned?
i anyone has had a simalar sound when boosting and have fixed it let me know what is was and cost if posiable.
cheers, hilux-(not so happy) -steve.

how loud is it? you should be able to hear the turbo when its boosting as its pushing alot of air.

check and see how much side to side and back to forth play in the shafts you have be for jumping the gun, there should be alil bit but ya dont want to much. My LN130 has a nopisy turbo an so has everyone ive been in. my turbo doesnt have to much play. itd be cheaper to replace the turbo with a 2nd hand one than an overhaul unless you done it yourself and got a turbo shop to balance it.

not really unless its a pretty large turbo, im pretty sure you cant hear a standard turbo on a diesel

we have a Nissan mistral turbo, and can never hear it, and not much of a boost kick in feel either

this could be the time to upgrade to a bigger turbo with more boost

Have you checked all hoses , air cleaner to turbo and tubo to inlet ???

na small turbos are loud as because they often have a high shaft speed for the amount of boost. most diesel turbos have a loud whistle because they are designed for response not high pressure. depending on the engine. i agree, check the play could possibly be bearings, is your car smoking a more too?. im sure by squeal you mean i different noise than the turbo compressing air.

is it idling any differently?

Air can Squeal out of a spilt in the intake pipe under pressure to, and its cheeper to look at first before you buy a new turbo..

yea good point bro.

i agree start with the basic's dont panic and buy something you dont need (second hand one shouldn't be to expensive) i guess we have to assume its a new noise your hearing? you could have a leak or a split hose. if the turbo was really shagged you would probably find it smoking and using oil, have you noticed any difference in performance? and have you been working around that area? check out the blades on the turbo, could be damaged if you have sucked something through it, and yea check for play, a little bit of up and down is normal for a used turbo but you dont want in and out play..
oh yea, have you played with the boost? eg increased it with larger exhaust, bleed valve or anything, do you have a gauge?

I'm with ELEV8 and mudzilla. Check your manifold gaskets as well. Had a squeal on a turbo Rodeo once, turned out it was the exhaust manifold gasket had a wee bit blown out of it. You could hear the turbo on that boosting up, loved the sound it made

Could be a loose fan belt. As mentioned, i'd check the basics before digging to deep.

Good point Vando.. I had the gasket between the turbo and the exhaust manifold blow twice on my 13bt.. I put it together with monkey snot and it didnt blow again.

i put a surf turbo on my old patrol and it blew the soft part of the manifold gasket out leaving the steel shim part behind and it squealed like a bastard ,so loud that we put it on a truck and took it home that way (we didn,t no it was just a gasket at the time ,the boys i was with sorted it out because i ended up in palmy hospital for a "visit")

Hey Mudzilla, monkey snot and a new gasket fixed the rodeo too. Ever had one of those vehicles you wish you never sold? ooops, I sense a hijack comin on

Check all your hoses aren't split, clamps are tight, manifolds aren't cracked, as the guys said check your manifolds for cracks and your gaskets are in good order, check your turbo exhaust housing for cracks, check exhaust pipe from turbo to muffler isn't damaged or has holes or splits in it, check your waste gate is working properly or the actuator is working properly too, if the waste gate is jammed open the turbo will overspeed as there is not the optimum compression gases in the turbo housing to restrict and slow the turbine, if it is jammed shut it will over work overpressurising the engine, check turbine shaft end float.

I personally would steer clear from second hand turbos unless you know they have been working. Nothing worse than putting a turbo on and having them leak oil because the seals are perished from sitting around.

I got my Pajero 4D56T turbo reconditioned for $200 but this was through a mate so may be $300 or so. But at least you will know the turbo is all good.

Happy diagnosing. :D

Yeah Vando, That 13bt was a Midi with spring over 60 diffs on 36's, Damd good truck. :D ,,, The turbo was bolted back on without the $60 gasket, just monkey snot.. :D

Have the same prob with my bounty took it to shop they thought it was the heat sheld coming away and just rubbing on the turbine said it was comon prob and showed me some that had failled in that way . he only took mine for a drive to come to that concussion. That was 6 months ago and its get louder now and more often.

the noise is not new just worse, its a wine that gets louder the higher the revs get once it starts boosting and i have always heard it. just when i frist heard it, the noise was only the frist couple of times i would boost at start of drive. then it would go away compleatly. i can still hear the turbo making a small whistle when boosting. i have a boost guage instaled and it is boosting @ 11psi. the motor hasn't lossed power since it has got worse over the last few days it has got worse to the point that it dose it every time i boost and while i was down at the waimak tonight it seemed to get better by the time we were driving home. it was almost gone compleatly to the point where you really had to listen hard to hear it. the pipes have all been checked and not smoking more. the noise at start-up was never as noisey, originally. it has regular services and never gets thrashed to hard. (4000 rpm max). i will go over it again tommorow and check the belt and connections and then if ok i will check the play in turbo shaft. then gaskets i guess will be next.

cheers for the feedback guys. hilux-happy-steve

you may not see a fall in boost pressure unless you are running near the maximum output of the turbo. I had an evo running 2.2 Bar (31.5 psi) boost (and yes it kept breaking just about everything and was a race car) cost too much so now I have a 4wd.

I think like most of the others you have a cracked or leaking pressure pipe if you have access to a compressor you can pressurize the turbo intake to manifold and then listen for leaks (it is a bit of a bugger to setup but the only way we found the leaks in my car you can hear them). We used a car tire valve and sealed that into a metal tin lid and pressureised the whole thing just behind the air filter (stick the lid inside the pipe going to the air filter and put in 5 - 10 PSI with the throttle closed). if the crack is small it will squeal and if it is in plastic it will vibrate also, my intake was all stainless, it was always one of the hose clamps just finding the right one was the issue, if it holds (mostly you will get some leakage) the boost then you are OK.

Oh and you have to use launch control and antilag to move at the 2.2 bar boost pressures like I ran, nice on the drive line as first was boost limited to 1 bar (15 PSI), and as others have indicated turbo's themselves do not squeel without loosing a whole lot of oil into the intake or exhaust, this is where you can feel the movementon the turbo shaft.

yes true that, but that is max r.p.m. that i get to and only if it needs a bit of extra revs and dont want to change gear in the slippery stuff. the squeel its making is starting to sound cool too. but has to be fixed. still haven't found any holes or splits in piping.

Just a thought, my 2lt turbo squeals a bit on boost until the engine oil is hot,(about 10-15mins after coolant up to temp) maybe it is similar with yours that's why it goes away after a while?

the squeel is still there but went up the north side of waimak and the gate where the challange is was being put up today (end of days for easy access) anyway i went upto the thrird set of powerlines and made my way across the river to the south side. i got across unassisted too. the noise is still there but at some stages it went away compleatly then it would kick in again several boosts later? {Steve_t647} is coming round on saturday to have a look and we will hopefully nut it out. i will post some info once i know what it is. the lux still goes well though but when that squeel occurs it is smoking more.
