Differences between Mitsibishi 4D56 and 4D56T?

Post by matts14 »

Hi all, I'm new here and I have a 89 pajero that I need a new engine for. It has a 4D56T (2.5l turbo diesel) and I have found a 4D56 for sale (non turbo) and Since I have all the turbo manifolds and ecu etc, I could potentially bolt them on. Does anyone know of any problems doing this, or differences in the two engines that would make the 4D56 not suited to doing this?

Cheers,
Matt

not a 100 percent sure but i think the 56t motor has under piston oil squirters and poss diff comp ratio

yea that was what i assumed also. a thicker head gasket will lower my compression, and it doesn't really run enough boost for the oil squirters to matter, so it might be ok.

as of last friday i'm in the same situ as guy above just got a 1996 4x4 l200 Turbo Diesel to replace my 1996 non turbo 2wd ute and the 4x4 one blew up! blew the head so i'm in the middle of putting a non turbo head back on the turbo engine founod that the ports where the glow plugs get to the diesel to ignite it no idea what there name is, well the non turbo ones are about 1.5mm smaller than the turbo ones but other than that, thats all i found different, also found something interesting turbo engine has 3 recessed circles in the top of pistons as from memory my non turbo ute had flat top pistons but my parts ute which is 1992 ish which is also non turbo has the so called turbo type pistons so i thought, with the recessed circles in top of the head, but also the other thing it may be that the older 4d56 engines with the protruding values in the heads may have to have the recessed 3 circle pistons for clearance for valves as my other head on my 1996 2wd ute (which got newer 4d56 than my other 1996 4x4) has the values that sit into the head (non protruding) so i wouldn't want to put a flat top piston bottom end (newer engine) with a protruding valves type head (older engine) as it may smash the valves to pieces ? this is what i have found out as i've pulled three 4d56 engines apart so if anyone finds anymore info let me know here, as the rumor about under piston old squirter's is still a vague area?

also the newer and older 4d56 engines take different glow plugs

hope this infomation helps someone !

yup the non turbo head works a treat i haven't noticed any power loss what so ever ! there will be some power loss but the state my engine was in before hand it just feels the same so the non turbo head cAN be used question answered!
